Con 2: When you're awkward and don't know how to talk to guys
Paige's point of view
"I'm looking for Zoe?" the guy at the door said. I sighed. Trust my little sister to always rack up the most good-looking guys.
"Right, you can come in, she's upstairs" I said, awkwardly trying to usher him into our tiny apartment while he politely declined and opted to wait outside.
We stood in awkward silence for a couple of minutes until it clicked in my head that he was the guy from before, the leather jacket guy.
"Uh – thanks for the other day, I mean with the –" I said, making weird hand gestures to try and illustrate him covering my head with his jacket. Why was I so incapable of being normal?
He smiled coolly like the obviously 'cool' guy he is and I felt sorry for myself. He was probably thinking I'm a nutcase.
Zoe came downstairs then, saving me from further humiliation and I was more than ready for them to leave so I could stop making a fool out of myself.
"Why don't you join us?" Zoe's handsome male friend turned around and asked, dark green eyes curiously scanning me. Suddenly I regretted not changing out of my scrubs earlier, not that I had anything better looking in my closet. I made more weird hand gestures which I thought would signal my disinterest and only realized how loony I must have seemed when Zoe and her friend started laughing.
Usually I wasn't this tongue tied when it came to talking. I mean sure I was socially awkward in most spaces but talking to Zoe's friend just kind of magnified my awkwardness. He was tall – like hovering over me tall, and I was pretty tall for a girl. He was also well built, from what I could see. His whole demeanour was intimidating and guys like that were scary.
"My sister isn't one for people filled places, or fun, or anything" Zoe said, rolling her eyes.
I loved my sister and we had a great relationship, even with our nine year age gap. However, our personalities were just very different. We were polar opposites in every way. She was the social butterfly of us two, adored by everyone, excelling in her second year at university and not to mention effortlessly beautiful, whereas I was suffering from some sort of social handicap.
She had been living with me for about a year now because my apartment was close to her campus and she wanted some freedom from our parents. So far we got along great and I didn't really try to enforce any rules on her, we were both adults. She had a budding social life and seemed to have a new guy every month with countless other guys chasing after her; whereas in my 28 years of life I'd never been further than kissing. So in all honesty, I couldn't really give her advice on any 'life experiences'. I just tried to be supportive and made sure we were both living comfortably.
"Have fun" I said, waving them out, almost having a yearning of some sort – wishing I could be going out with a handsome boy, but that was crazy so I quickly brushed it out of my head.
I didn't know how to date and I doubt I had the time to put into a relationship, not to mention the opposite sex barely found me attractive.
Quinn's point of view
I have no idea why Paige couldn't come with us. I almost blame Zoe for not giving me a chance to convince her sister. When she told us to 'have fun' she had a look on a face that made me want to drag her out with us – we were just having waffles and ice cream. I mean, some people needed that extra push when it came to socializing right?
"What are you thinking about?" Zoe asked, waving a hand in front of me.
"Just this and that" I didn't even know where to begin because I was also confused about what I was thinking and how I was feeling. I'd liked girls before – sure, but it usually subsided after we fucked. Maybe this was it, I couldn't shake off Paige because we hadn't shagged –yet. I looked over to Zoe and she was licking her ice cream seductively.
"Tease" I joked.
She just shrugged and said, "You know I've never actually seen you this worked up over a girl."
"No idea what you're talking about mate" of course I was going to deny it. I didn't want to be obvious.
"But as your friend, I'll give it to you straight- you don't stand a chance with my sister" she said, and I thought about my answer carefully.
"Why's that?" I finally asked.
"This and that" she said, licking her ice cream. She was playing with me, she knew I hated suspense.
"Zoe" I said sternly.
"Fine fine. There's many reasons Quinn, the major one being the massive age gap"
"What age gap?" I asked. She had to be at least 24 or 25, that was completely fine with me.
"She's 28 and you're barely 21" It didn't sink in for a while, in fact it didn't sink in at all - probably because it didn't matter. It wasn't a determining factor to how I felt.
"So?" I asked
"You might not have a problem with it but my sister would never ever consider fooling around with someone younger than her, in fact she doesn't 'fool around' at all, which is what you're after right?"
"Yeah of course, I don't do relationships" I said, but some part of me told me I wasn't being completely honest.
"Yeah so that's it then, just get over it because it's starting to be weird" she said laughing, but it sounded forced.
"Are you jealous?" I asked her, genuinely curious because Zoe wasn't the jealous type.
"Of course not, but you're a good lay and there's no way I'd still shag you if you were with my sister"
"Touché."
I don't know what the hell was going on. I'd been getting myself worked up on a stupid schoolboy crush. I needed to snap out of it.
