It was the middle of the night when the door opened and a girl entered the room. Lily had been wide awake, having insomnia and all. The girl wore scrubs like Lily did and she was quiet about coming inside the room. She seemed to think Lily was asleep and was being considerate.
"Hi." Lily said suddenly and the girl stopped in front of her bed. She turned to Lily's side of the room.
"Hey." She replied, sitting down.
"What's your name?" Lily asked, sitting up as well.
"Dori."
"I'm lily."
"Hello lily."
Suddenly Lily didn't feel so alone. She'd be able to sleep knowing she wasn't alone in this big room. Dori gave Lily a welcome, warm feeling.
Dori laid down underneath the thin blanket the hospital provided.
"If you get cold," Lily said, "Just ask for more blankets. The layers help."
"Thanks." Dori mumbled, she sounded sad. "I'll keep that in mind. Let's sleep now."
Lily fell asleep easily.
___
Lily woke up right before nurse Butch banged on the door before poking her big head in.
"Breakfast in fifteen minutes."
Lily looked over to the other side of the room to see the bed made perfectly, as if Dori was never there. She must of been called to see the doctor.
Lily showered in two minutes, without washing her hair and got dressed. Meaning she put on some sweat pants and a hoodie that had finally been dropped off the previous night by her parents. She made it out five minutes before breakfast and everyone was out and in line already, eager to eat.
Harriet was at the front, an older woman, maybe 70. She had cornflower blue eyes and soft, crepe skin. She wore matching pink pajamas and her hospital socks. Behind her was George and Myles, the only other males in this unit.
George was probably forty, a depressed and divorced alcoholic. He didn't say much but he let Myles, who was eighteen, talk his ear off, occasionally telling him to shut up. And then there was Mia & Faye.
Faye was tall and skinny, with anorexia & scars all over her frail body. She was twenty four with two twin toddlers. She carried their picture around with her even on smoke breaks and trips to the cafeteria and gym.
Mia was the new girl. The one who came in screaming in a straight jacket. Lily's first impression of her was "psycho" but once she was settled in, she was less scary. She was extremely pretty and shy. But underneath that cute shyness she was a paranoid schizophrenic. Just like Lily.
Lily didn't socialize much with the other patients. Which was crucial for her treatment plan but lily just didn't like any of the people in here. She thought George was pathetic and needed to man up and face his problems. She found Myles seriously annoying and talkative, he had ADHD and his medicine obviously didn't work. Faye and Mia stayed side by side, they were roommates. Lily tried not to look at the oh so beautiful Mia in fear of blushing.
Finally Nurse Butch and Nurse Angelina and a couple orange shirt techs escorted the patients to the cafeteria. Today's breakfast was watery eggs, plastic like turkey bacon, sausage and French toast. Lily picked orange juice like always.
She sat alone and drew in her notebook with her pencil the has no eraser the size of her pinky. The doctor would take everyone's notebook at the end of the week to see if anyone had improved. Lily didn't care what the doctor thought. She would just wait until she could go home.
