 ~Caroline~

I woke to the sound of rain pattering against the window and a gloomy shade cast across the room. Strange, today was supposed to be sunny. We were going to walk a trail  after breakfast but plans might change. I laid there in total peace and watched the droplets of water slide down the window. Had Sol opened up the curtains?

With that thought I shifted in the bed and found that it was empty, sheets ruffled from where he had slept. I didn't wonder where he was for long...Sol was sitting across the master bedroom in a chair tucked into a corner and was looking over a piece of paper. "What are you doing?" I asked, raising to my elbows, and he looked up with a frown on his face.

"Well I was trying to remember the whole x and y chromosome thing from middle school a lifetime ago...but it doesn't really matter since there are one of each combination."

"What?" It took me a minute to understand what he was saying and in that minute a smile broke across that handsome face of his that I loved so much. "Really?" I'd nearly forgotten about the test results from the OB...with everything that had been going on.

Sol got up then and came to the bed. I wanted to protest and pull the blankets back up when he moved them away, uncovering my naked body. "Mhm..." But the thought was gone when he leaned in a kissed over my stomach that was starting to show signs of life growing beneath it.

"A boy and a girl?" My hormones got the better of me in that moment and tears came to my eyes. Somehow knowing the genders made it all so much more real. Now I'd wait for their first kicks and decorate a nursery when we got back home.

"My babies." With one more kiss he came up and gave them to me. I'd wanted to read the results together. Maybe even plan a reveal. But this, right now and here, as Sol laid beside me and pulled me close to him, was perfect.

A boy and a girl...

"Slow down, Lydia!" I called after the hyperactive child who was running along the dirt path, dark curls bouncing, to catch up with Christopher and Nick. She was on it today...I wouldn't have been surprised if she'd snuck cookies before our little adventure.

The rain had stopped, turning the day into a damp, humid mess. "I was thinking we could find a creative way to tell the kids about the babies, before we leave." Sol said as we walked hand in hand. I was still surprised about the little private gender reveal in the bedroom this morning.

"That's a great idea. Their going to be so happy...they both get what they want."

"Mhm." He stopped us and turned me to face him, just as Nick, Chris and Lydia disappeared around a bend in the trail. It never failed, at least ten times a day now he needed to put his hands on my belly. He did it then.

"Can I start the nursery when we get home?"

"Of course. Whatever you want, baby." We stood there for several long moments, his hands on me, mine on his. Then he took my hand and looked down at me deviously. "Come on...let's go explore." Sol pulled me off the trail into the dense trees.

From the trail they had seemed inviting, not so much now. I had no desire to get lost. But looking at it from the bright side, at least I'd have my husband to get lost with. The leaves beneath us crunch under our tennis shoes and the ones above, rustled harmoniously. "What are we going to do out here besides get lost? See how many birds we can identify?" I asked sarcastically, avoiding a broken branch in my path.

We were the length of a football field away from the trail when Sol stopped suddenly and had my back against a tree. "Mmm. You don't know anything about birds, girl, but go ahead...I'll just be here, getting you off. Don't be afraid to scream..." He said against my ear before he attacked.
