no one specialToday is the first day of winter. It's really disappointing how we never get snow over here in Toronto, but when we do the snow just turns into slush. Even though the weather is gloomy I'll try to make the best of it.
I graduated from university last year and I've been residing in a small apartment with my roommate, Isabella. We don't really talk, I guess we don't have too much in common but she's pretty nice. Never around though... her boyfriend comes over from time to time. He has that American psycho vibe. It has been 2 days since I've seen her last, but it's nothing new so I assume she's with her shit boyfriend.
Just then I heard the mailbox swing open and two letters fell on the floor. I know that haunted sound... rent. I work at MoonBucks, a minimum wage job where I have to give coffee to middle-aged women who are going through a midlife crisis. It's a pain in the ass but it pays rent (barely).
I pick up the letters and just as I guessed it- rent. My eyes glance at the peculiar letter, and I can tell it seems different. I feel a chill down my back and immediately get a bad feeling from it. It's a plain white letter with the words written "reward" and under Isabella's name.
I leave the ominous letter on the coffee table and headed my way towards work. I'm actually happy I have a job, to be honest, I have been having trouble finding a job maybe for the lack of my job experience, or my pure hatred for customer service. (I never really had a job that lasted longer than a month...)
My shift finally ended before I heard the last thing I wanna hear. My manager, oddly named Pinkie, swiftly walks by me and says "I'm gonna need you to stay late and close shop." I had to close up shop, great. I hope the bitch who ended their shift early chokes on their saliva. 10 pm rolls around and it's just me and one other staff worker.
His name is Ellery, and I hate that he has to be my age and very attractive. His scruffy dirty blonde hair always looks perfectly imperfect. His green emerald eyes stare at me as I mop the floor. "What?" I say, "do you want to mop the floor for me?" He chuckles and rolls his eyes, "You're so catty" he responds.
We have been co-workers for about two weeks now, and he helped me with my training process. On our breaks, we usually talk about how shit our manager is and make stupid jokes about the customers we had to deal with. He always drops me off at my bus stop if we ever get the chance to and it's always what I look forward to at the end of the day. Whenever we are alone, in fact, I kind of look forward to it. So hey, thanks manager Pinkie I guess I won't hate you for the time being.
Ellery and I wrapped up our tasks and started putting our coats on. "Hey, do you think I should quit this job?" I asked him hesitantly. He stopped buttoning his coat and looked directly at me.
I kind of regret saying that now. It feels like he's looking straight through me. "Why would you do that idiot?" he responds in a cold manner, he continues, "are you trying to leave me all alone with PINKIE?" I laugh whilst tying my boots, however, Ellery wasn't laughing. I glance at him towering over me with his hypnotic eyes staring straight down at me.
"Well, so what if I did? I hate it here especi-" I get cut off by his finger on my lips. What is he doing? His soft finger feels like silk on my lips, making me almost entranced. Our faces are dangerously close to each other while he's looking in my eyes.
What's taking so long? Why is he not saying anything?
Ellery gets up from his squatting position and continues buttoning his jacket. After 10 seconds of direct eye contact with his finger on my lips, that's it? "What the hell was that?" I questioned. He glances at me and smirks. "You're not gonna make me beg for you."
My jaw almost drops to the floor, I was not expecting that. I pick myself up from the floor and look up at him. "Beg?" I say nervously laughing. He raises his eyebrow and scoffs. "I don't beg, I get what I want and I'm not letting you quit," he says in a serious tone.
I've never seen him like this before, what is up with him?
We walk out of the Moonbucks together and I lock the door. We both walked to the bus station as we usually do, but now it's different. Instead of laughing like normal, we walked the whole way without saying a word. It's awkwardly silent as we wait for my bus. Out of the blue Ellery asks me "Are you looking for a job with higher pay?" Is it not obvious? I think anything is better than getting paid minimum wage. I stood silent before I muttered "its that obvious?"
He smiles and looks away. "YOU'RE obvious" he responds with a smile. I like seeing his dimples on his cheeks when he smiles. I smack him on the shoulder hiding my smile back. Just before he can say anything else, the bus lights glow in the dark night, arriving and stopping before us.
The bus doors swing open. Just as I set one foot to enter the bus, Ellery grabs my wrist and under his breath says "Are you seriously going to leave me?" I glance at the bus driver who is clearly thinking about driving off, then I make eye contact with Ellery again. "I think I just did" I smirked. He lets go giving a sigh and a scoff. I pay my fare and sit near the window to wave goodbye, however, he's not there. I'm guessing he made his way home, or maybe he's mad at me?
Just then I get a text message from him saying "made you think of me, not that it's hard anyways"
That son of a-
