It was a sunny Wednesday afternoon, with barely a cloud in the sky, but that didn't do much to brighten my mood. I had just finished my homework and had decided to go skateboarding. The reason why I felt so gloomy was that I had just gotten into another fight with my aunt. This time it was about the fact that I had again left the house before finishing my homework. We usually didn't bicker so much, but everything was unstable now that my cousin/honorary big brother had left. He usually broke up the fights between me and Aunt Jess as she always listened to his solid voice of reason, as did I, but right now he was spending a semester in France for his sophomore year while I rotted away over here in Quarkville. Jake is Aunt Jess's only child and she loved him dearly. Quite more than me her impossible niece who always seemed to be getting into trouble. I knew that wasn't true-the delicious cookies she made for me some days showed that-but sometimes it felt like it. It felt like she just put up with me because I didn't have anyone else.
My mother had died when I was young, maybe 3 or 4 from some disease I can never quite remember the name of, and my father traveled frequently all around the world, but his job didn't allow for me to come with him, so we mostly just connected through phone calls once a week. So, for now, it was just me and Aunt Jess. Most people assumed we weren't related as Aunt Jess had light brown hair usually cut short, but when it was long it was wavy. She also had brown eyes. At first glance, many people thought that she was a jolly little lady, but in reality, she rarely joked. Jake, on the other hand, had an easy smile and was usually seen laughing. He had light brown hair as well and brown eyes that often had a distinct mischievous twinkle in them. You could usually find him wearing a hat, especially his favorite red one. He rarely got frustrated about anything and had a light and easygoing attitude, unlike me who couldn't think positively to save my life. At least that's what Aunt Jess and Jake said. But yes, I was the odd one out in the group, with my thick black hair in a ponytail and bright blue eyes. Jake always teased me saying that I don't have the friendliest face, which is true as I rarely smile unless I'm with Jake. It's not that I actively try not to smile, it just happens.
Anyway, the whole point of me skateboarding right now was so that I could relax, and thinking about all that stuff was not helping, so I put on my headphones and continue listening to my favorite songs.
It's been a while and I've just been cruising nowhere in particular, until suddenly this boy appears in my line of vision. I quickly swerve to avoid a collision, but he does the same thing, and I end up hitting him anyway. I'm still kind of frustrated and this is doing nothing to help my day.
"Hello, mademoiselle! I see you have dropped a few things eh?" he says reaching to help pick up my headphones.
I look up at him and notice he has very light brown hair, possibly the lightest I'd ever seen. He had kind brown eyes too and was very tall. I shake my head.
"Yeah, whatever, just...watch where you're going, ok?" I say as I quickly pick up my things and turn around to skate back home.
I twist my body to see behind me and I see the boy smiling and waving at me. What a weirdo.
