My Mom has been a loser my whole life. She's a pill popping, gold digger. She's moved us all around the USA trailing after her latest "Big Fish". She met some guy at a bar last week and she's seen he every night since. Apparently he's some aging rockstar with deep pockets. Just when I thought she couldn't hit a new low, she has. She's going to mange to ruin music for me as well. It's probably Edgar winter! Haha!
Anyway she's talking about us going back to England with him. I hope to God he leaves her after he meets me tonight. She'll have to tell him her real age after he sees me. I'm 18 so there's no way she's 28. Ha! I step out of the shower and see the ghastly outfit my mom has laid out for me. I can't believe she still try's to tell me what to wear. It's a blue rayon pants suit with shoulder pads. She's such a slave to trends. Just because everyone else in 1983 thinks looking like a shiny plastic bag is cool , it doesn't mean I do.
I hear the door open downstairs. God, they're home, I can hear my mom's drunken giggles and what sounds like an equal inebriated english man."NADIA! COME DOWN HERE, I-I HAVE SOMEONE SPECIAL FOR YOU TO MEET." she yells up the steps.
I quickly put on a floral maxi dress and a little brown eyeliner. That should shut her up, she's always prattling on about how I need to make myself more presentable and it's not the 60s anymore. I start down the step and see my mom in her too tight leopard print dress and blue eyeshadow with her fake, bleach blonde hair fizzed out in a horrible perm. I laugh a little as she titters on her heels.
She doesn't hear me coming, she's too enthralled in whatever story she's telling her latest mark. He notices me, his eye lock with mine and trail down my body. I frown knowing this won't end well. It's happened before. She finally looks over and sees me standing at the bottom of the steps. She comes over and grabs my hand leading me over to suitor whose now leaning back on to our couch like he owns the place."This is my little girl, Nadia, I've told you all about her, haven't I." She says in her fake sickeningly sweet voice.
"You have, but she doesn't look so lil." He laughed. His accent thick and heavy.
He smiled at me said "I'm Jimmy." He took my hand and kissed it sloppily.
"He is such a gentleman!" My mom gushed. I didn't answer.
"So where are we going tonight?" I ask, cringing at the thought of being seen in public with these two.
"I donno" she slurs.
"Why don't we stay in, love? I haven't had a home cooked meal in ages." I'm relieved.
I look him over. He's tall, thin and pale. His dark hair reaches a little past his shoulder. Large dark sunglasses hide his eyes. I can't place him.
"We'll have steaks and baked potatoes."
"Well i'll have to go out and get something. Will you two be alright here?" She asks.
"Of course we will, lovey." He slurs before I can answer.
I know I'm going to end up cooking. My mom dutifully staggers out the door. I silently pray she doesn't kill anyone on the way to the store.
"So, how old are you, love?" He ask putting his arm around my shoulder.
"I'm 18." I say short and clipped. Then I get up and go out to the kitchen, leaving him to sit in the living room. I turn on the oven to preheat and get out a frying pan. The stereo is emitting static, so i put in a Led Zeppelin Cassette. The opening riff of Nobody's Fault but Mine fills the room.
Time to set the table and get out a few condiments. I humming along with the song . When I look up, I see Jimmy standing in the door. It hits me , he's Jimmy Page!!!! I'm shocked and disappointed. I think he realizes that I've suddenly recognized him. He smiles and takes off his sun glasses. He looks as proud as a peacock.
