a night at murray's

It was around 9:30pm when Joyce and Hopper realized they were going to have to spend the night at Murray's. After all they did walk forever in the heat, stole a car, and have yet to find out what the Russians are building. In other words they needed a break. At least this time they'd be sleeping on beds and not in Hoppers blazer for a change.
As they were trying to translate Russian to English while talking to Alexei Joyce began to dose off on the couch while sitting next to Hopper.
"Alright look, can we just pick this up tomorrow? It's late and I could use a good sleep right now.." Hopper said annoyed.
"Yes. Of course. I'm assuming you two-" Murray started but Hopper quickly interjected.
"Will sleep separate thank you." He said straining himself from not ripping off Murray's head.
"Yea yea goodnight.." Murray's said walking away laughing as he was showing Alexei to the couch in his study.
Hopper sat there for a few minutes channel surfing when he felt something on his right shoulder.
Joyce had her head resting on his shoulder she was so tired.
He didn't flinch though. Hopper gave a small smile, held her hand and said "Goodnight Joyce."
After about an hour or so, Hopper became tired himself and went to wake up Joyce but immediately decided against it.
He didn't want to wake her since she had actually been sleeping the whole time meaning she wasn't having nightmares and if he just woke her up she probably wouldn't go back to sleep.
So instead Hopper carefully sat up, picked up joyce while she was still asleep and carried her to Murray's guest bedroom.
He put the covers over her and pulled up a chair and held her hand.
Whether Joyce had feelings for him or not Hopper was in love with her and would do anything to protect her so instead of sleeping he stayed with her for about another hour to make sure she was really ok and then went to sleep on the pull out sofa.
Hopper woke up around 3:30am to Joyce tapping him repeatedly on the shoulder with tears in her eyes.
"Hey hey what's wrong? Did you have a nightmare?" He asked.
"No I just woke up and I couldn't stop thinking about the kids..I don't know if they're ok and no ones been answering there since we got here and..I can't sleep.." she said with a few tears escaping her eyes.
"They're smart kids joyce, and they've got Jonathan and Nancy. They'll be ok whatever happens." He said with a smile while rubbing her back.
"I know but can..can you- can you sleep with me tonight? I just. I can't be alone." Joyce pleaded.
"Yea yea of course, come on." He said as they began walking back to the guest room.
After they both awkwardly got under the covers Joyce finally summoned the courage to say what she had been wanting to say since it happened.
"I'm sorry." She wasn't facing him.
He sat up confused.
"I'm sorry for standing you up. I just I couldn't go. I wanted to so bad..but this voice in my head said I was gonna worry about every detail of that night and worry until I couldn't take it and go home and ...I believed it. I'm sorry." She was now facing him on the verge of sobbing.
"Hey you don't have to apologize. I didn't think about your feelings and I shouldn't have taken out everything on you these past few days."
They were looking at each other. Finally expressing their emotions.
"It's funny I- I think the reason I was so mad at the thought of El and Mike together all the time was because..these two kids they had already found their forever person and..I guess I was jealous I didn't have that with..with you."
She was still looking at him with hopeful eyes.
"Hop.." they moved closer.
He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and they moved closer.
The kiss felt like a first kiss. Soft, shy and yet so powerful.
They kissed more passionately and Hopper stopped.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" He asked. He already made her feel awkward around him after Murray put their love out in the open and he wanted to make sure she wanted this too and that she was comfortable.
"I promise." Joyce said back.
"Okay."
He got up and locked the door.
