Hushed voices of students fill the school library as I am huddled at a desk in the corner, riffling through my textbook. I sigh to myself as I struggle to answer the question I'm working on.
"Why is physics so bloody hard" I mutter to myself. Scanning the pages, I scribble down a few notes, pushing the rest of the world out of my mind and thoughts.
"Boo" I hear from behind me.
I jump in my chair, dropping my pen on the floor. This earns me a few weird looks from other students, to which I respond by smiling weakly and looking away, behind me, where I see the cause of the voice.
"I have a habit of making you drop things, huh?" He says with a slight smirk and chuckle.
"Reggie!" I hiss, "I can't talk to you here people will think I'm insane! What are you even doing here?"
"Sorry I just thought you'd like to see me..." he mumbles, a look of sadness striking his face.
Guilt washes through me. I really didn't mean it like that I just...
"I'm sorry I didn't mean it like that.." I mumble.
He cracks a smile and laughs. "You should've seen your face! Turns out I'm a great actor."
"Oh shut up" I roll my eyes. I pause for a second, then get my phone out and hold it to my ear.
"That's rude! It wasn't even ringing?" Reggie says, perplexed.
"Otherwise people will think I'm talking to myself" I mutter into the device. He nods in understanding. "Why are you here anyway?" I ask.
"Well I just thought I'd let you know that Julie is about to perform at the rally thing" he explains. "There are cheerleaders there!" He adds.
I can't help but chuckle as I pack away my things. "Of course there are."
While I'm packing away the last of it, Reggie passes me my pen and I thank him.
"Let's gooo" he exclaims excitedly, as I haul my bag into my back and follow him to the gymnasium. We arrive in the crowded gym, or at least 'I' did anyway, since technically no one else can see Reggie. After an announcement from the principal, everyone starts standing up. Julie's old friend but now rival Carrie Wilson swaggers up to me.
"Oh look what we have here, the nerdd" she sniggers, drawing out the sound of the d. "Talking to yourself, as usual. Why are you here anyway? I thought you only know your way to the library" she simpers, adding her pathetic little laugh at the end.
"You'll see" is all I reply, rolling my eyes. I glance at Reggie, who at first was goggling at her in awe is now making rude faces and gestures in her direction. I chuckle a bit, earning a weird look from her. Moving my eyes towards the stage, i notice Julie approaching the keyboard and then starting to play. The chords from a song called Bright reverberate through the large space, making students stop and turn. Her angelic voice cuts through the air and I smile weakly. She has always had an amazing voice.
"She's so good" Reggie mumbles as he watches in amazement.
Soon he disappears from my side. I wonder where he went? This thought is only fleeting as a second later he and the two other ghosts appear on the stage playing along with Julie. A collective gasp escapes from the bundle of students. Each ghost has an identical look of shock painted on their faces, realising that people can see them. Why can they see them?? They're ghosts!!
I gotta admit though...they are so talented. Luke's voice, and Alex's drums, and Reggie's bass...their energy radiates and I can't help but smile and tap my feet along to the beat. I also feel something I haven't felt in a long time, something makes me want to be up there with them, performing. I see Carrie out of the corner of my eye sulking, which makes me smirk a bit.
When their performance is over, they all bow and the ghosts disappear with a crack through the air. Everyone claps, and the principal allows Julie back into the music program.
"I'm so proud of you!" I hug her tightly. I see the boys celebrating beside us, making me smile wider.
"Thank you!" She exclaims, beaming at the boys and I, then going off to talk to Luke.
"I can't believe they saw us!" Reggie addresses Alex and I.
I quickly get my phone out and talk into it again. "I'm still confused this isn't how ghosts are meant to work. No one except Julie and I can see you but when you play music everyone can see and hear you??" J think out loud.
"I've got so many questions. Death is meant to bring answers not more questions!!" Alex sighs, running his hands through his hair.
"Relax" Reggie says chuckling. "We can play music!!"
Soon Julie and Luke rejoin the group.
"Do you guys wanna go celebrate?" Reggie suggests.
"No sorry, I've got class and after that Luke and I are going to write songs" Julie explains.
"I-I can't be here" Alex says, pacing. "I'm so confused why can't the afterlife come with instructions!! I can't handle this" he continues, suddenly disappearing.
"Y/N?" Reggie asks expectantly.
"Sorry I've got class..." I reply.
"Come onnn, how about after class?"
He insists, balancing on the heels of his feet.
"I have to study..." I start saying.
"Come on just this once" he pleads, his eyes wide.
I guess it won't hurt to go out and do something for myself just once. My mother's voice comes to my head again 'why not try another angle...'
"You know what, why not" I give in. "But after class. I'll meet you out the front of the school at 3?"
He nods, smiling widely. "I knew I'd crack you eventually!!"
I guess instead of studying I'm hanging out with a ghost. I never saw that coming.A/N: sorry I took so long to update, I've had a lot going on. Hope you enjoy and comment your thoughts <3
