Ughhh...Today was my 19th birthday. Birthdays were supposed to be happy, but I always dreaded mine, after all, it was also the crown prince, my younger brother's birthday.

There was always an elaborate birthday party planned for my younger brother, Asher. Asher was the pride of our empire. Asher was the strongest fire wizard our empire has had yet. There would always be a celebration for 5 days before Asher's birthday.

When I was younger, I remember pretending it was for me. I chucked. Ah, how naïve I was then.

I put my chin into my hands and sighed. How I longed to go outside. It has been 12 years since I was locked up inside of the Wizard's tower. I missed being able to feel the sun on my skin, the soft grass and gentle breeze.

I looked into the mirror on the right side of me. Although it was my birthday, I did not feel any different. I still had the same fire red eyes and longish snow white hair. My skin was ghostly pale. When I turned back, my eyes caught something. It was a note that was left by Konrad a year ago. The note was on top of a worn out book.

"Happy birthday." it had read, it was short and simple. A smile came over me.

Konrad was the only person allowed to enter the first floor of the wizard's tower because he was appointed as my teacher when I was seven years old. Konrad ruffled my hair. 12 years ago, my father, the Emperor, suddenly ordered for me to be locked away, never to step footside again.

When I was young, I was sickly. The maids and servants mistreated me and always bullied me. Sometimes I would go days without food.

In a way, I was glad that I was locked away in this tower. There were no maids or servants and Konrad always made sure I had plenty to eat. In a way, I think of Konrad as my father.

But almost a year ago, Konrad had to go back home to nurse his old mother. Konrad was my only visitor. I felt lonely.

I got up and stretched. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, I thought.

The only thing I could do was read, since Konrad was the only person allowed up here, he always brought books. My birthday present when I was 18 years old was an old huge book about magic. Even though I had gotten the book a year ago, I was still not done reading it. It seems as if every night, more pages are added to it, making it impossible to finish.

Recently, I thought that I was just useless trash with barely any magical powers. But that all changed when I read the book he bought for me a year ago. I thought Konrad was playing a joke on me because when I opened the book, it was completely blank.

One night, when I accidentally pricked myself on the finger, a drop of blood fell and all of a sudden a sea of words appeared.

So I let my blood drop onto the book and began to read it. I don't think Konrad really knew what type of book it was, otherwise he would never allow it for fear of being discovered by my father.

The general knowledge about magic was there were vast amounts of variations and combinations such as ice and lightning but the majority of the magical powers would fall into 4 categories in order from strongest to weakest: fire, earth, water and air. But according to the book there was 1 more category: light. Very few know of this category because it was very rare. Only one was known in the entire history to have this power: the saintess. It has been 400 years since the last Saintess was born as the world was peaceful from the demons. The only conflicts were humans themselves, waging war to expand their territories.

In this world, magical power is first measured when we are born. Although you can get it tested when you are older, you will more likely be at the same level as when you were born. Very few people are able to level up. When Prince Asher was born his magical power was level 60 which is considered high. Level 10-30 is considered common. Level 31-50 is considered good. Level 51-80 is excellent.. Level 81-100 is very rare and is considered extraordinary. There has never been anyone who was below level 10.

Except for me, when I was born it said my magical power was 0.

I found out that I had this rare light power about 3 months ago. The book stated that light magic was often misinterpreted when measured because the device was designed to detect offensive magic. It would count defense magic as 0. If that is the case, then maybe I am now powerless as I thought.

Light magic is meant to heal. So, it cut my hand and began to practice and after a couple of tries, was shocked when I saw a faint gold glow that was emitting from my hand. I was a light user! I was a Saint.

But, why was I born with light magic? Did this mean that the demon clan would rise again?

I dismissed the thought. No way, us humans have been safe from the demon clan for almost 400 years.

Snapping out of that memory, I pushed back my chin length hair, it had been almost 2 years since I last cut it. I need to cut it soon, I thought.

For the entire day, I read.

I yawned and laid down, it was getting late. I put my head down onto my old pillow and fell asleep.

I was in a deep slumber until I heard a strange noise. I got up slowly and rubbed my eyes. Was it perhaps Konrad? I shook my, no he couldn't be here. Then who was it?

I took off my brown covers and got up from my bed. My eyes widened when I saw a gloved hand smack down onto my window sill. What in the world? An intruder?!?
