Walking along the stone-paved street of Diagon Alley, Lila hummed a lilting tune as she stared up at the darkened sky. It was probably well after midnight, 'welcome back' drinks at the Leaky Cauldron with the mates had run just a bit too long, but she couldn't help thinking that despite the late hour, walking down that moonlit street was exactly where she needed to be. Glancing into dimmed shop windows as she passed by, she felt a strange sense of calm in being nearly alone on the empty boulevard, taking in the quiet and familiar setting. she passed a couple snogging in an offshoot alley and smiled to herself, spinning in a small circle as she continued to hum. It was nice to be back in London after being away for so long, and something about this night just felt so overwhelmingly pleasant. Almost on cue, she was shaken from her reverie by a fat droplet of rain falling straight onto her forehead.
Ah, well, a little rain never hurt anyone, it's still a lovely evening, she thought to herself. But the rain grew heavier as she walked and storm clouds gathered quickly. She looked around the street, squinting through the heavy rain for somewhere to get some shelter, spotting the tell-tale animatronic form of the Weasleys' shopfront just ahead, and sure enough there was a perfect person-sized awning over the front door. Jogging across the cobbled stones, her shoes making splashing slaps with each step, she ducked under the awning, squeezing her hair between her hands to wring it out as she got out of the rain.
The shop was dark, of course. It was too late for even rabble-rousing nonconformists like the Weasley twins to keep business hours, but looking at the interior through the windows made a wash of nostalgia come over Lila. Her fingers came up to trace the orange-red painted wood of the door as she studied the shelves full of gags and delights. It seemed like it had been forever since she stepped foot in the boys' store, and a faint smile came over her lips as she thought about being seventeen, laughing with her schoolmates as they fawned over every new zinger of a product. She sank down to take a seat on the stoop, faint warmth spreading over her cheeks as she remembered Hermione's words in the pub earlier in the evening.
"Lila, I swear to god the twins have gotten even more insufferable since you've been gone. I can hardly stand to be around them these days! I go home with Ron for the holidays and all the Weasleys have paired off, except those blasted boys. They've shifted into terminal bachelor syndrome, and it's just ghastly. Ron tells me they're going through girls faster than they come up with new products." She'd said, gulping her drink between sentences "I can't believe you used to fancy them. Absolutely draining, they are."
Lila used to fancy them, alright. Fred and George Weasley simultaneously felt like firecrackers on a summer evening and whiskey by firelight. Being around the two put a smile on her face and a fire in her belly. Back at school she'd spent about as much time lying in bed thinking about them as she did laughing and arguing with them whenever they were around her. Hermione always thought it was odd that she'd never fancied one in particular, but she herself knew that was precisely why she'd never do anything about her feelings. She absolutely pined for the both of them. For Fred's more domineering manner and George's softer golden-retriever-like playfulness. There was no way she'd ever take the gamble of picking one over the other to confess her feelings, or god forbid, tell them both. She traced her lower lip with her thumb as she pictured the boys' faces and wild smiles, spacing out into the rainy street.
She was still absorbed in thought when the shop door opened into her back, pushing her forward and making her shout in surprise. George looked down abruptly as he stepped out onto the stoop, looking down at the woman sitting on the stoop.
"Oh dear! Awfully sorry, I didn't realize anyone was sitting there." He offered his hand down to her to help her up, "Didn't mean to maim ya, love."
Lila looked up at George's face, dumbstruck for a moment as she took in his features. His face seemed even more grown up and masculine than when she'd last seen him, his chin and jaw sharp and dappled with copper stubble. His deep brown eyes looked down at her with concern and she felt her stomach jump a touch.
"George!"
"I'm sorry, I don't think we've--" As he looked into her bright blue eyes he realized who it was, "Lila! My god, how long's it been!" He grabbed her hand and pulled her up onto her feet, looking her over with a wide smile.
"I've been in the states for about three years now," She said, fighting the flip-flopping of her stomach when he said her name "Blimey, George, have you gotten even taller in that time? We were already grown last I saw you!"
"Maybe you've gotten shorter," He said playfully, eyes glinting. He looked her up and down and felt his breath catch just a touch. Blimey indeed, he thought. Lila had always been fit, but looking down at her now with rain-soaked clothes sticking to her body, he realized just how lovely her curves were. She was only about five inches shorter than him, and she had a frame that was so undeniably soft and feminine. His eyes lingered on her chest, the dip of her waist.
She laughed shortly, nervously, and they just stood there a moment, looking at each other, studying each other.
"I just stopped here when it started raining." She spoke, breaking the silence and bringing their gazes back to each other's eyes.
"Tsk-tsk, I've never known you to be so unprepared! Didn't you bring an umbrella? Or a coat, even? You're positively soaked." George jabbed her shoulder mischievously, "Fortunately for you, I happen to be prepared for just such an occasion, and I will valiantly offer myself as aid," He announced, reaching into the shop and pulling an umbrella from the hook inside the door.
"I am indebted to you," Lila started, laughing, reaching for the umbrella, but George pulled it back from her grasp at the last second.
"Ah-ah. You see, the trouble is, I only have one umbrella. And seeing as you and I aren't going to the same place, that poses a bit of a dilemma." He drawled pointedly.
She rolled her eyes playfully "Of course, the classic problem. I suppose you're turning me out in the rain on my own then, huh?"
"You wound me! What kind of apology would that be for opening a door on you? No, I think not," He reached his hand up to scratch his chin, miming deep thought "But oh! A solution. Seeing as neither I or Fred has seen you in so long, and there's only one umbrella, and you're positively drenched, and we have a perfectly good shelter just down the road...it only makes sense that the best solution is to accompany me back to our humble abode so we can all catch up over a hot cup of tea until this rain ends." His head cocked slightly and a smirk played at his lips as he looked down at her, "Whaddaya say?"
Lila felt her breath catch in her throat as she looked up at his mischievous smirk, wondering if he realized how handsome he looked. God, she thought, her alone with the two of them after all these years.
"I suppose you make a strong case." She said, and his smirk widened into a grin.
"Great! Then it's settled," He winked "I'm sure one of us has something dry you can wear back at the flat in the meantime."
Lila only just then looked down and became painfully aware of just how stuck to her the fabric of her dress had become, and she blushed. This would be an interesting night.
