I woke up to a sudden shaking and the smell of chocolate pancakes. Opening my eyes, I witnessed Lexi plopping herself on my bed with a huge grin and a breakfast plate filled with all of my favorite foods.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!" She screamed throwing her blonde hair back and forth as she bounced with excitement. I sat up smiling and immediately grabbed the coffee. As much as I love my Aunt Lexi, it was way too early to handle her overly-bubbly attitude that managed to make an appearance once a year. After all, she is over-compensating for the lack of two family members.
"Thanks Lexi," I smiled and proceeded to grab the plate of carbs. I notice as I'm sitting there that she's dressed in her work clothes. Today she leaves for Los Angeles to attend some big wig doctors conference that lasts an entire week. I don't know what you could possibly need to talk about for a whole week, but Lexi seemed excited about it.
"So listen, I know you said that it was okay that I left today, but I can totally stay here for another night to be with you. We could get some takeout, watch movies?" she has her concerned parent look on again.
"No really, it's fine," I assured her. "I think Maggie has something planned for us tonight anyways, so I won’t be alone. Besides, I'll be at school half the day; you wouldn't even see me." .
"Alright, if you're sure," she sighed with relief. "But I am going to leave you money on the counter for food and other necessities. Don't break the house please. And if you happen to throw any wild parties remember, please no sex in my bed," she says with a smirk.
"Oh, if I have any wild parties your bed is going to be the designated sex room. " I teased. She gasped and proceeded to throw the nearest pillow at me, which I narrowly duck. Laughing, she gave me a huge hug goodbye and headed out to catch her cab.
Once she left, I fell back on my bed and took a couple of deep breaths. It's not that I don't like my birthday, it's just that it's never really what I imagine it to be. The idea of birthdays in theory is great, but when it comes down to it, nothing really special ever happens. The attention, however, is always a definite boost. Eventually I looked at the clock and realized that if I don't get up, I'm definitely going to be late for homeroom yet again. Mrs. Hall was already up my ass for skipping last week, I seriously didn't want birthday detention.
Getting up, I grabed my American Eagle jeans and favorite brown leather jacket and shrugged them on. My natural chocolate brown waves fell right past my shoulders giving a model-esque vibe to my heart-shaped olive-skinned face. I lined my eyes with eyeliner and ran downstairs to grab my backpack and shoes. As I put on my favorite worn out combat boots, I noticed a jewelry box sitting alone on the counter table.
"For moi?" I muttered to myself as I grabbed the box and eagerly open it. Delicately sitting inside is a golden circle shaped locket. Around the locket are swirls and engraved designs while in the very center is a small ruby stone that flickers every time it catches the light. It looks like something out of the 1950's, and it was perfect. I quickly clasped it on and make a mental note to text Lexi a thank you. I grabbed my bookbag and ran out the door to begin my day as an official adult.
