Dipping her head into the water Violet half closed her eyes, liking the sudden silence that surrounded her. The sun shone warmly down into the bay, reflecting from the turquoise blue water. Thomas was passing a volleyball to Sandra and Michael on the beach, while Theo sat on the shore, letting the water wash over his feet. At the moment Violet was the only one in the water, but she didn't mind it at all. In all honesty it was probably better to have a few minutes of calm, before the others got bored of the ball. Just like the quiet before a storm, those were the words that Violet would have used to describe her day. Everything seemed too serene, too calm. It almost seemed like the cloudless sky was also a warning sign, that things could darken up any time soon. Thoughts similar to these flashed through Violet's mind as she stared up at the sky, floating on the sea.
The noise of a boat coming towards them made Violet lift her head from the water, wet dark brown hair falling in front of her eyes. On the shore everyone else froze, watching as the boat moved closer and closer to them, the people on board slightly getting more into focus.
-You've gotta be kidding me, that's Chloe.- Michael was in a fit of laughter, though his face was flushed red. It never was a big secret in front of the others that Michael was head over heels for Chloe. And it wasn't a big surprise either. Chloe was an undeniably pretty girl, with thick black hair and a sparkling smile and she gave off the aura of perfectness. Plus, Michael's and Chloe's parents were friends, meaning that Michael had known Chloe since forever. But it almost felt like there was an unbreakable wall between the two, whether it was one of Chloe's newest boyfriends, or Michael backing out last minute.
Sure enough, standing in a light blue bathing suit, Chloe was watching the people on the shore, boldly ignoring Violet with her best friend next to her.
Rose, the once sweet and sensible girl had turned into quite the opposite two years ago, when she became a member of Chloe's friend group. But still, if you looked at the light blonde haired girl for long enough you could still see the kindness in her ocean blue eyes.
-What a surprise it is to see you here.- Sandra's tone sent a warning towards the two girls, as if to say that now wasn't the time to annoy them.
-Same for you.- Chloe's gaze swept over the four people on the beach lazily, then finally came to a stop on Violet, who was half squinting because of the sunlight.
-Well, since you're here, you could join us.- Michael spoke up, suddenly losing his air of confidence. Two glares fell onto the boy, one from Sandra and one from Theo. Theo till then had been purposely not meeting Rose's eyes, the spark that had once burnt between the two had ended in a nasty argument, but at that moment he looked into the dark blue gaze. And perhaps, it had been better for him before, because seeing the hurt swirling in Rose's eyes made a frown appear on the boy's face.
Oblivious to the other's annoyance, or perhaps, just enjoying it Chloe nodded slowly.
-Rose, what do you say?- she turned towards the blonde girl, who simply shrugged. -Alright then, we can stay I suppose.-
