Exactly four in the afternoon, Violet took one last look at the time on her phone. When she was sure that she was neither early, nor late she slipped her phone back into the back pocket of her shorts and ran up the front steps of Daniel's family house. The house felt more like a mansion to be true. Not that it was that big, no, in fact it was the same size as every single house in the neighborhood. Well... to be honest that didn't mean much seeing how it was the rich neighborhood. But the architecture of the house seemed to scream wealth and money, and with its beautifully kept garden it only proved the point further. So it was only understandable that Violet felt out of place in her worn out sneakers, ripped jean shorts and flowery blouse.
-I'm really starting to have second thoughts.- she muttered to herself as she reached to ring the doorbell.
While she waited for Daniel she took a quick glance at the porch. Paired with the white and clean walls of the house it might've come as a surprise that the whole balcony carried a darker feeling to it. Not that much in colour, more in the way both the house and the big tree in the garden closed in the space. But before she could linger for any longer the door behind her swung open and she was met with Daniel's face.
The boy was dressed casually, so Violet didn't feel out of place anymore. Still, she was waiting for a grin on Daniel's face, the lopsided one that never seemed to leave him. But this time was different. This time his face looked ahead calmly, but there was a look of uneasiness in his eyes.
-You know, I was starting to fear that you weren't coming.- he scratched the back of his neck awkwardly as he stepped out of the way, letting Violet in. Squeaking a hello that seemed way too high for Violet's usual tone the girl stepped onto the white marble floor.
-Should I take my shoes off?- she asked, looking over towards Daniel. The boy nodded slowly before gesturing towards a door.
-You can put them into this room, with everything else that you don't want to carry.- he explained as he walked over and opened the door. When she got a glimpse of the small room Violet felt her eyes widen. The whole room seemed to be filled with shoes, with shelves on either sides and every row held at least three pairs of shoes.
-Thanks.- with that Violet slipped out of her sneakers, placing the worn out dark green shoes next to a pair of sparkly looking high heels. Probably owned by Daniel's older sister. -What subjects did you fail? Because you never actually told me that.-
Daniel simply shrugged, but for the first time since Violet had stepped into the house a sheepish smile appeared on his face. And to be honest, while he had looked good before, it was nothing compared to how he looked like, with even that small foolish smile.
-Well, quite a few to be frank with you. History, maths, and I barely scraped through on science. But I did pass, so I guess that isn't that important.- Violet felt her eyes widen with each subject that the boy listed off. At the moment she couldn't even imagine how Daniel could be so composed, knowing that these grades counted into his future. She supposed that this realization, that he had actually messed up this time was what made him call her in his moment of loss.
