FIFTEEN
ALTHOUGH RORY HAD ENTERED THE New Year on rocky footing, she quickly adjusted and was making the most of her time. January flew by with nothing except the reality of heavy school work and a trip to Hogsmeade to pass the time. It was a nice trip, a much better distraction than getting blackout drunk on New Years Eve. She spent the day half with the twins and half with Cedric. A nice compromise for Rory.
February went by slowly as everyone anticipated the second task. Cedric had figured out the clue from the golden egg, but wasn't confident in his plan for the task. After he nearly died while passing the dragon, he kept getting insecure with each idea and wanted to start from the beginning.
So the night before, Rory and Cedric sat in the library, textbooks scattered around them, with topics ranging from Transfiguration to Charms to even Arithmancy for some odd reason.
It seemed Harry Potter had also procrastinated. Rory saw as him, Ron, and Hermione were huddled over a small desk practically throwing books in the air out of frustration. Rory wasn't sure why her and Cedric were still flipping through books when they had come up with a perfectly good plan.
"Cedric, the bubble head charm is going to work perfectly! You should get some sleep, it's getting late." Rory said softly.
"No! What if it doesn't work, Rory!" He replied with a slightly harsh tone. "I'm going to fail, again!"
"Cedric!" Rory whisper-yelled (as to not get scolded by an irritable Madam Pince). "Don't talk like that! Remember what I said —"
"Positive thinking, positive outcomes... yes Rory, I know." He sighed. "It's just... this was also a really bad week for Cho to get mad at me."
Rory sighed and placed a comforting hand on his back, "That's because you won't ask her out and make things official! But don't think about that right now, although after this task you should really get on that. You're going to do the bubble head charm tomorrow. I mean, poor Harry over there hasn't even got the slightest clue. He hasn't even learned the bubble head charm yet."
Cedric cracked a small smile, "I guess things could be worse then, yeah? Alright. Thanks, Rory. Let's go off to bed, I can walk you back to your common room."
Rory nodded and began cleaning up the books around them with her wand. She decided to send a couple of books in Hermione's direction with a wink. The younger girl mouthed a nervous "thank you" and began flipping through pages.
Once Rory and Cedric finished packing up, they headed out together, passing the poor fourth years on their way out.
" — I know I haven't got a chance of turning into a frog by tomorrow morning." Harry sighed.
Rory pitied the boy, she really did. She wished there was a way she could help. But really, it took her and Cedric long enough to figure out a plan for himself, the night before nearly wasn't good enough to whip something up for Harry.
