"Slytherin!" the sorting hat bellowed.

Automatically, the whole Slytherin house stood up and cheered at the announcement. Eagerly, Draco marched over to the table and took an empty seat next to an older boy with fair brown hair.

"Congratulations, I'm Terence" the boy stated.

"Thanks, Draco" he responded.

Terence smiled before continuing to watch the other students being sorted. Draco turned back around just as the sorting hat was shouting "Hufflepuff" to a small nervous ginger girl.

Draco's father had always told him Hufflepuff's were weak and feeble, so the house seemed to suit this anxious girl. Like the other houses, Hufflepuff's cheer was just as loud before settling down again for the next name to be read out.

"Ronald Weasley" the old witch from earlier called.

The ginger haired boy from earlier walker up the stairs towards the sorting hat. Draco had guessed right: he was a Weasley. When the hat announced "Gryffindor" a relaxed smile grew across his face.

Draco was confused as why Ron was happy to be in Gryffindor. His father had told him Slytherin was always the elite house. Draco thought Ron should have been sorted into Hufflepuff like the anxious girl but his questions were answered when he saw Ron was greeted by three other ginger odd looking boys who seemed to know him well. They must be his siblings.

Draco's gaze was soon adverted when the witch read out "Harry Potter".

An immediate silence fell over the great hall and even the headmaster Dumbledore, an ancient wise man, sat forwards in his seat. Harry cautiously walked over to the hat. Draco glanced around the great hall and everybody was star shocked and staring towards Potter. Why did he deserve this special treatment? It was like everybody formed an instant respect and proudness for him.

The silence lasted for minutes whilst the hat was perched on top of Harry's messy head. What was taking so long? The hat had quickly decided for Draco, it had barely touched his sandy blonde hairs when it called out Slytherin. Draco could see Harry was whispering to the hat but he couldn't make out what he was saying. Personally, Draco hoped Harry was sorted into Slytherin as it would make the befriending business a lot easier and Draco didn't want to have to mix with people who weren't in his house. However, his prayers were not answered when the sorting hat screeched out "Gryffindor".

Like the Weasley boy, a bright large smile formed on Harry's face as he ran over to the Gryffindor table. Draco thought Harry should surely be upset; why would he want to be in Gryffindor? If what people say were true and Harry was the 'chosen one' Slytherin would perfectly match his power. Draco scowled as he saw Harry laughing with his newly made friends, it was going to be a lot harder for Draco to gain his trust now.

**An hour later**

"Python" a higher year witch spoke and the stone wall in front of them gradually retreated into an arch way leading to a dimly lit common room.

"The password changes every fortnight; the new password is put on the notice board" Terence whispered to Draco as they entered the dark green themed room. There was a collection of dated furniture around a large stone fireplace with a towering serpent portrait above and shelves filled with various old looking books. It seemed cold compared to the rest of the castle and reminded Draco of home.

"Girl's dormitories down the stairs, boys to the left" the older girl stated.

Crabbe and Goyle were also expectedly sorted into Slytherin. So the three plodded through the common room and down a left hallway which led to a series of doors. The doors had name plates: four to a door. They searched along the corridor until they found a door reading 'Draco Malfoy, Gregory Goyle, Vincent Crabbe, Blaise Zabini".
