The next morning, they were all dressed in house robes with books in hand ready to enter the classroom. The class was just above the Slytherin common room so they didn't have to travel far. Consequently, they were the first in the class apart from the girl Draco had met in Diagon Alley. Purposefully, Draco tried to sit as far away from the girl as possible towards the back of the room. Blaise, Crabbe and Goyle sat around him. Draco quite liked Blaise and he hoped they would become good friends. He seemed a decent sort who knew what he was doing compared to Crabbe and Goyle who spent half their time in another world. The room slowly started to fill up with other students from different houses. A group of anxious girls wearing Hufflepuff robes entered the room: they must have been the mudbloods Blaise mentioned earlier.

The old witch from last night appeared from a wooden door at the front of the classroom and stepped over to the desk at the front. "So she's the head of Gryffindor?" Draco questioned.

"Yeh, Professor McGonagall" Blaise answered. The professor although old had long brown hair tucked away underneath a tall witch's hat. She wore a similar velvety green robe to the sorting night.

"Silence please" McGonagall called, "Welcome to transfiguration, during this class it is very important to write down everything you see so you can use it revise for your O.W.L's at the end of the year."

Draco and his group sighed as they picked up their quills ready for the lesson ahead. "Now many of you may not know what transfiguration is, let me show you." McGonagall stated. The professor pointed her wand at an old dusty candlestick on the desk and with a flick transformed it into a peculiar golden looking bird, kind of like an eagle. The whole class watched in astonishment and glanced around at each other in silence expressing their wonder.

Until a girl spoke "Professor, if you don't mind me asking, what makes transfiguration different to an Animagus?".

Draco peered around the classroom recognizing the voice as the girl from the Diagon Alley – Hermione. As well as being chatty she was smart as well. The rest of the class looked puzzled at Hermione's question, but the professor answered her, "An Animagus transformation requires no spell Miss Granger."

"No spell, how can magic happen with no spell" Hermione instantly responded.

"Like this!" the Professor stated and simultaneously started shrinking and within a second turned into a black-spotted grey cat. The whole class jumped up from their seats to get a better view of the cat.

"Cool" Draco gawped.

"Yeh that's awesome" Pansy responded.

The cat started to lick its paws cleaning the dirt from its claws before jumping up on the desk and picking up a quill in its mouth. The cat glared around the room almost instructing the students to start making notes of what they had learnt. Draco grabbed his quill and wrote down the difference between transfiguration and an Animagus still inspired from the experience. Maybe he would enjoy school after all.

All at once, the classroom door swung open and Harry and Ron came running through. Draco looked up, realising Harry was in his classes after all which should make his task easier. Harry and Ron were late, so obviously missed the part where the Professor was the cat. Draco snickered as Harry and Ron thought they would avoid getting in trouble, when the cat leapt from the desk and transformed back into the professor mid leap. In Interest, the rest of the class looked up again as the professor transfigured back into herself. McGonagall had a stern look on her face as she marched to the two boys and questioned their lateness. After their reprimand, Harry and Ron sat down on the row infront of Draco and the fellow Slytherins.

Draco knew he had to try and speak to Harry, but due to his little social skills he didn't know how to approach him. He glanced down at the parchment on the desk infront and grabbed his quill: he would send Harry a note. Draco pondered for a minute wondering what the note should read in order for Harry to favor him. Before scribbling down 'Sorry you got sorted into Gryffindoor, it would have been nice to have you in Slytherin – Draco :)'.
