Lunch Time
Finally, after snoozing in Adv. Algebra, it’s lunch time. A time where I can sit next to my friends, make fun of teachers, make plans for later that night (Skype, Xbox, smoke pot, etc), and, on most days that go really bad, the lunch ladies make great food. Today is a perfect example. They make potatoes, beans, and corn on days where days that don’t go completely bad, but because I’m having such a horrible day, they made pizza. I know I talk bad about their cooking, but these women know how to make a pizza. The soft crust, zesty sauce, and the American cheese they put together to make this is to die for. It’s so perfect and brings amazing taste to my mouth. The fact that the lunch ladies make it when I have very awful days is awesome but it is also quite strange. It’s as if they know beforehand that I have problems. Like they see the future in their big cooking pot and serve meals for kids who are troubled. That is one really good rumor I could start, but I’m more realistic. They make it on shitty days by coincidence. Today, I have my regular one slice, chocolate milk carton, and tater tots on my blue tray as I head to the table I have been sitting at since I started high school. My friends are already sitting at the same table as I put my tray down and take a seat. They stop talking and look around for a little bit. I look around, notice how the cliques are all sitting together. Jocks with jocks, nerds with nerds, etc. Weird how our table is filled with social outcasts and just a group that hangs with each other but I don’t think I’d want to hang with a greater group of people. We aren’t popular, we aren’t super smart, and we aren’t weird at all. We are just four people who all feel like we were put in this town by accident and have made the best of it together. When we aren’t letting this establishment suck our souls with silly straws, we are enjoying ourselves by playing video games, talking about things we all like, smoking pot, or all at the same time. Over the weekends, we would head to the woods after finding someone to get us alcohol and acquiring marihuana from Derrick’s house. Some days we wouldn’t get our run, but we would always have pot. We’d smoke in the woods, drink and have a lot of fun. Whether we are in the pouring rain, the bright sun, or even the rare snow, we are there after school Friday or all day Saturday. Some caves would keep us warm as we would take shelter during the rain. In the sunny weather, it was beautiful. The trees glistened in the sunlight as we got drunk. I’d always toast my beer to the sun for looking amazing and giving me hope to look forward to that very moment in the forest. As flashbacks of last summer go through my head, my friends look worried as Michelle looks at me before I have time to eat.
“Hey Jason, are you feeling any better? You never replied to the text I sent you and I’m just looking out for you.” Michelle asked with concern.
“Yeah, I’m better now that you asked, but Eddie sent me a pic of my mom earlier and it pissed me off.” I reply to Michelle as I take a bite of my pizza.
“Wow what a dick.” Derrick states as he is the outcast of the outcast as he doesn’t have lunch, because his family cannot afford it.
It’s harsh, but it is the truth. Derrick doesn’t mind. Maybe that’s why he chases paper so much, so he can chase it for his family. He doesn’t have to eat in this establishment because he would rather feed his family. Maybe my realism could kick in, but before it does TJ begins to speak, while chewing on his turkey sandwich he brought from his home. The sight of his food being grounded up by his teeth makes me not want to eat as I put my pizza down and hear what TJ has to say.
“Why does this dude keep bothering you bro? Fo’real he is the starting quarterback on the Varsity football team, has the whole staff in his back pocket and he is hella popular my dude.” TJ reminds me of how great Eddie has it.
