Written because there's a cockroach in my room at 1 am that my dog is trying to find and kill so he's keeping me up and as a result I can't fall back to sleep
"what's a soulmate?" Duncan asked Violet rocking the bench swing back and forth in the park. The cold air of the night calming both their fears of getting scolded once they get home. "in your opinion what truly is a soulmate?" Duncan asked.
Violet looked down at her feet smiling slightly. "Well it's like a best friend but more." He smiled, keeping his full attention on her.
"I lost it...I lost my ribbon" Violet said frowning at Duncan. "Don't worry we can get you a new one?" Duncan rubbed her back smiling.
"Vi, what happens if someone else is after our fortune?" Duncan spoke softly rubbing his thumb on the back of Violet's hand. "We'll go through it together." Violet spoke holding his face. "That's what I'm afraid of..." He whispered putting his head down.
"it's the one person in the world who knows you more than anyone else." Violet said now rocking her feet to move the swing.
"Violet what's wrong?" Duncan asked bending down to try and comfort the sobbing girl. "It's fine. I watched a sad movie before you came." Violet got up hastily trying to avoid the topic. "Sit down I know it's not that. Now tell me what happened." Duncan looked her in the eyes with a pleading look. "I was just thinking about my parents and where they would be." Violet confessed trying to shrug it off. Duncan hugged her tightly and let her cry on his shoulders.
"what do you think is a soulmate?" Violet asked the Duncan who was looking up at the stars. "It's someone who makes you a better person, actually they don't make you a better person you do that yourself because they inspire you."
"Duncan what are you doing!?" Violet shouted walking up to the boy with a lit cigarette and liquor in his hands. "Just having some fun, speaking of fun why don't we have some." Duncan said putting the cigarette back in his mouth, pulling her by the waist. "I respect your opinions but you're underage and drunk. Plus that is so unhealthy, Now come inside." Violet said pulling him inside the house, storing the half empty liquor bottle and throwing the cigarette.
"A soulmate is someone you carry with you. It's the one person who knew you and accepted you, believed in you before anyone else did or when no one else would."
Duncan looked back at all the laughs they had together. The memories on how they were the only two laughing. Violet thought of how they would stare at each other in adoration laugh too hard because they were staring at each other for so long. Duncan also thought of how Violet would grin so wide her eyes would crinkle. How they didn't care about who was judging them since they were having fun.
"and no matter what happens you'll always love them." Duncan finished off, putting his hand on hers, smiling, then looking back at the stars. Violet looked sideways to catch Duncan still smiling at the stars.
Violet stood up, starting to walk in the direction of their shared house with their siblings. "Are you my soulmate?" Duncan stopped walking still holding onto Violet's hand. "I hope so." Violet turned around going in to kiss him. He smiled just before their lips met
