It didn't take long for shit to completely hit the fan at Hogwarts. Dumbledore was folding under the pressure from the ministry and the press. Mrs. Umbridge had refused to teach us anything useful, so this left students very bitter. Mainly the girl who took school a little too seriously, Hermione Granger. I sat alone with her and Ginny in the common room, listening to her rambles once more.
"Oh my god!" Hermione slammed the newest paper of the Daily Prophet down and looked up at us. Her face was angry and surprised.
"What is it?" I questioned her, never letting my eyes leave my paper.
"Ministry passes educational decree number twenty-three: Dolores Umbridge appointed Hogwarts high inquisitor!" She exclaimed. She smushed the paper in her hands a little to show she was angry.
"What does that mean?" Ginny asked.
"It means that Umbridge is like an authority figure now. She can make up new rules and enforce them, dismiss teachers, and basically whatever else she wants." She explained.
"You're kidding..." I sighed, finally putting my book down to pay her any attention.
"Along with the fact that I don't know how we're supposed to pass out O.W.L.s if she won't bloody teach us anything!" Hermione exclaimed angrily. She slammed her book shut and turned to Ginny and me as we sat across from her.
"We have to do something about her." She added.
"Yeah, I agree. Poison will do the trick." I laughed. I turned to see Ginny smiled up at me from looking down at her book for so long.
"Very funny, but that's not what I'm saying. The problem isn't with her, it's her teaching. Why don't we do it ourselves?" She concluded. I could see the lightbulb go off in her head, this was not going to be a good idea.
"Do what?" I questioned her.
"Defense against the dark arts, we can teach it to ourselves." She explained
"I don't know..."
"No, it's perfect I already have an idea." She simply said. She jumped up with no way to stop her. She quickly turned around and ran up the staircase up to the common room.
"What are we going to do with her?" I asked Ginny, playfully.
It didn't take long for her to come up with a crazy plan to pull this off. It only took her to the weekend trip to Hogsmate to organize something. She told us to meet her there and she'd catch up with us later. We saw several other people like Luna Lovegood and Neville Longbottom. It didn't take long for a bunch of people to crowd in the restaurant before Hermione got back. She walked through the door with her head held high with Harry and Ron following behind. The dimly lit pub was primarily empty and private enough for us to talk without anyone hearing. The long table was almost full of people anxious and waiting for Hermione to join us.
"Hermione, what's going on?" Harry questioned her, still following close behind.
"These are some people I mentioned my Defense Against the Dark Arts idea with," she explained.
"You mean teaching ourselves?" Harry asked. The three took a seat at the end of the table and Hermione began her proposition.
"Hi everyone, I thought it would be good if we met and discussed how we wanted to teach ourselves. Because we need to learn it, not this rubbish Umbridge is doing." She said sternly.
"here, here!" Fred Weasley exclaimed from the opposite side of the table.
"Obviously, this will help us pass our O.W.L.s, but more importantly, it gives us the ability from... Lord Voldemort," she said quietly. Many people jumped when she said his name.
"How do we know you-know-who is back?" One boy asked.
"Dumbledore believes he is" Hermione explained.
"You Dumbledore believes him." The boy said, skeptically.
"That's true, but I think we're drifting from purpose-" she stuttered from her loss of words.
"It's okay Hermione. I believe Voldemort is back because I fought him last year. Dumbledor already told the school that. If you didn't believe him you won't believe anyone" Harry began to speak.
"Well, anyway. I think that to learn properly we'll need a teacher," she added.
"But we're all students, none of us expect to-" Neville asked nervously.
"Someone here does." Ginny snickered to herself and looked over to Harry.
"Me?" He questioned. His thick eyes brows furrowed together and he tilted his head in confusion.
"I, for one, would like to know why Harry is more qualified than the rest of us." Some asked cockily.
"Well, he's the only confronted you-know-who himself four times and lived to talk about it," Ginny said defensively.
"He saved the sorcerers stone his first year!" Ginny's brother, George added.
"and he won the Triwizard Tournament last year" I exclaimed.
"and you fought you-know-who and he still didn't manage to kill you." Ron finished.
"Okay, All in favor of taking lessons from Harry." on the positive note, Hermione took the opportunity to vote. She raised her hand along with everyone else's. So it was settled, we were going to look into using an old classroom for our headquarters. Before we left, we all signed our names on a paper that wrote 'Dumbledore' Army'.
After signing, Harry and I linked our arms together and made our way back to Hogwarts. Dragon Ally was significantly less full than I expected it to be considering it was a Saturday.
"So do you think Hermione has completely lost it?" I asked him. Our arms clung together tightly, shielding one another from the crisp and cool air.
"No, I just think she cares and maybe feeling a little rebellious. Her heart is in the right place though. You know her, she takes school very seriously." He said. We had turned to look at each other, I realized our faces were nearly centimeters apart. I quickly looked back down the alley and tried to ignore it.
"I guess, I don't know how we're going to pull this off." I sighed doubtfully. His face turned visibly more confused. He furrowed his brows together and turned to look at me once more.
"What do you mean?" he questioned.
"it's sneaky, and believe me I love sneaky. But we don't even have a play to practice left and I have no idea how we're going to be able to do this under Dumbledore's nose." I explained.
"Knowing them, they'll figure out something, they always do," he said, leading closer to the train. Silence fell between us, the only thing filling the air was the sound of the wind our breathing. With each exhale you could see the cloud of condensation from how cold it was I shivered as we entered the train. I figured it would be warmer but it wasn't. I shivered as I took a seat next to Harry, I tried to breathe into my hands to help but it was no use.
"Are you cold?" He questioned, looking over to me. I could tell by his face that he was concerned.
"A little," I smiled. I tucked my hands under my arms and looked up at him.
"Would you like my sweater?" He asked.
"Oh, it's okay-" I tried to refuse but I have a hard time saying no to him.
"Here, it's no problem, really." he insisted. He slid off his jumper over his head, causing his shirt to lift up slightly. My eyes widened, and I couldn't look away until he handed it to me. I quickly look back up at him a smiled. I slid the jumper on and breathed in slightly, it smelt of cinnamon and vanilla. The scent wrapped around me like a tight blanket and that's I could smell.
"Thank you," I said softly. He smiled at me once more and placed his arm behind me, resting in on the back of the seat.
