(This is a soulmate AU where your world is colorless until you touch your soulmate)

Everyone's world begins with no color. Black and white are all that can be seen. It can't be helped... at least until the right time.

It's hard to do daily tasks if someone were to ask for a specific thing; "I need some green peppers," "Could you point the way to the red tent?" But they don't know it's the same way until the reply follows.

Every day she decides to paint, (Y/n) has to ask what colors, or shades of grey to her, need to be used to complete her project, and the answer was always the same.

"Perhaps you should find something else to do, dear." That's what her late mother would tell her; to give up on her dreams before she could even begin to set the path towards them.

But now that she was on her own, it was pointless to stop and even try to paint whatever little scene it was.

CRACK! Thunder and lightning had appeared out of nowhere and was followed by buckets of rain.

(Y/n) cursed under her breath and sat up from the tree she had been sleeping under.

Usually, she tries to sleep through the whole night, no matter the circumstances, but this night felt different, and she couldn't put a finger as to why it was.

"Shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot." She picked up all of her supplies and pulled her hood over her head.

The layout of her map appeared in her mind: a small valley was close by.

BOOM! (Y/n) yelped and began to run. She wasn't far from the valley, but in the rain and the mud, it'd take longer than it usually would.

"Oof-" (Y/n) fell to the floor after colliding into something, but when she opened her eyes... the world... it wasn't black, white, or grey.

"Wha-" In front of her was what she could only assume to be a colored figure, holding out a hand.

"Come on, get up quickly!" (Y/n) took the figure's hand, suddenly running through the forest with him.

After two minutes, they reached a clearing. A tall home that looked similar to a silo.

"Come now, my tent is just across the bridge, and I'd hate for you to get cold before we properly meet." They began to run again, quickly crossing the bridge and finally making it inside the tent that he spoke of.

(Y/n) ran her fingers through her hair, then squeezed the bottom to get all of the water out. "Thank you," she finally said. The gesture was both towards shelter and the color that was brought into her world.

The stranger smiled. "Of course." He squeezed the water from his hat before placing it by a lantern.

"May I have the pleasure of knowing your name? I don't believe I should call you 'soulmate' this whole time. Unless that is truly your name." He winked.

(Y/n) flushed. "I-I'm (Y/n). (Y/n) (L/n), and you are?"

"Snufkin," he answered. A small smile played onto his lips. "I've been searching for you for quite some time."

The color of (Y/n)'s cheeks deepened. "As have I. It's one of the reasons I began traveling."

Snufkin's smile widened. "You're a traveler?" (Y/n) nodded. "How convenient."

A harsh sneeze followed Snufkin's reply. (Y/n) had fallen on her back. She rubbed her nose with her sleeve after collecting herself and gave Snufkin a nervous smile. "I don't suppose you have anything to warm us up, do you?"

A soft, quiet laugh was the response. "I do." He sat down next to (Y/n) and started a small fire in front of them. He pulled her over to his body and allowed her to rest on his chest. "Once morning arrives, we can head up to the house. I know someone who can explain this to us. For now, you just rest. I'll wake you when dawn arrives."
