Nathan POV
Together, Hunter, carrying Midna, and i ran back to the castle, untoutched by the tall vines and the branches on surrounding trees. I felt horrible. No matter what, Midna has stayed by my side, and now she may die because of that...
"Nathan! What happened to Midna?!? Who is this boy?" My mother wailed as Hunter pushed the wooden doors of the throne room open.
"Mother, Midna must get to the infirmary, she was wounded defending me from a creature, a griffin, that this man, Hunter, beheaded.... Midna..." I struggled, trying to keep my voice from cracking.
Hunter looked over at me, eyes showing concern. My mother told us to go to the infirmary, and fast. Air flowed by as we rushed down the hallway, knocking a few people over.
We entered the "hospital" and the healer, Rhett, immediately took charge and asked Hunter to hold Midna down as he operated.
That's when I lost it, sitting in a corner of the cold room, never feeling more alone. I softly hummed...
I'm falling, down into my shadow,
Holding in my every breath
As I await the deadly nightSo scary, but you can't give into this
Feel of pumpkin carriages
And all the witches see it in your eyesSee you and your dreams too,
Baby you're nightmares too
That's where I'll find you.I felt someone sit close to me, and put a hand on my shoulder. I looked up and saw Hunter, he was saying something about "I could, I SHOULD have gotten there faster." But I wasn't focused.
"Midna is still having shots and will not be able to be seen as it could increase her heart-rate. I'm sorry Nate, but you will have to wait a while to see her." Rhett said, pity etched into his face.
I was about to stand up, but for some reason, I turned to Hunter and asked "Will you stay with me for a while?" My voice cracked, and I'm sure I looked pathetic, but I've just half-lost my best friend. "Of corse Nate." He replied, the helped me up.
We walked back to my room in silence, the only sound from our feet on the floor. I stopped when I got to my room, and he stopped when he bumped into me.
I opened the door, and was greeted by the cold, dark inside of a prince's room. I took off the robe, leaving on a more casual shirt, and Hunter took his coat off.
I swiftly started a crisp fire, illuminating the room, and sat in front of it, after putting a pillow down.
Hunter did the same, and we sat in a comfortable silence for a while, cracking from the fire keeping us from absolute quiet.
I turned to the side of his face, and mumbled "Hunter?" He turned face me, relaxed, and nodded once. "Can I tell you something?" Nod. I sighed, then said " I hate this, this royalty, it's crap. It's all 'that's not very king-like' or 'pay attention Nathan' I wish I could live a normal life, have kids and a life with someone I love, the normal things. Instead I feel like I'm trapped between these 4 walls, never to leave."
He looked me in the eyes, then pulled me over and hugged me, which was nice, as I haven't been hugged in a long time.
"Can I tell you something?" He asked, his voice still the same, but with a slight edge on it. "Of corse Hunt."
He took a deep breath and started " ever since my mother died, which was 7 years ago, she died when the outer parts of the kingdom were attacked, my father has been... Different. All he does is work, making weapons left and right. He barely sleeps, almost never eats, and never goes outside. He refuses to even look at me like I'm his son. He doesn't love me, and he's told me that. I haven't been truly loved for seven years..."
He trailed off, his usually steady voice now wavering, tears in his eyes. I hugged him again, now tighter, pulling him close. We spent the rest of the night sitting next to that fire, telling stories and secrets, and I wished this night would last forever.
