Chapter 34

Love Is Blind

 -- New York City --

“New digs.”

“Same as the old digs,” Jamie responded, looking about the dismal space.

“Except for that,” Sarkey added, lifting her chin at the huge, gleaming stainless steel container that dominated the center of the warehouse floor.

“Looks like a grain silo,” Jamie commented.

“Or one of those fermenters you’d see at a brewery,” Sarkey observed.

“It’s new. Probably Travers’ work,” Jamie summarized.

They stood in a large, empty warehouse in the Vinegar Hill section of the city at the corner of Jay Street and John Street. Travers had leased the warehouse, one of many he’d begun securing around the city the moment the decision had been made to take the hunt to the New World. The enterprising batman had people stocking the facilities with weapons, food and first aid supplies.

Operating overseas for the first time Travers crew moved slowly as they made their way about a new city. For operational security the logistics crew had never met Roland or anyone in his team. They didn’t even know the purpose for the provisions. Therefore if any of them were captured all they could reveal would be the location of safe houses and lists of varying types of supplies. This degree of compartmentalization kept everyone secure.

This security precaution also meant Roland couldn’t call for a delivery. Travers’ people stuck to their schedule. Roland only received the location of a safe house from Travers when the facility had been stocked or when the scheduled delivery was far enough out that Roland could use the building without stumbling into Travers’ crew.

Fortunately Roland’s hunters packed heavy. They could stay in the field a week or more at a time without need for resupply.

Roland assigned a team to finish welding a ladder onto the side of the strange looking contraption. Instructions delivered he approached Sarkey and Jamie.

"What the hell is that?” Sarkey asked, pointing at the silo.

“That?” Roland responded. “That’s for later.”

“Right,” Jamie muttered.

Roland scoped out the warehouse.

“Travers chose well,” Roland observed. “Tell me why.”

Sarkey thought for a moment.

“We’re across John Street from Wallabout Bay, a stone’s throw from the water.”

“What else?”

“It’s located beneath the Manhattan Bridge midway between The Brooklyn Bridge and the Williamsburg Bridge. Easy access to Lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn Queens Expressway if we need to escape.”

“Good, but you’re missing something.”

“The warehouse is across the street from a storage and moving company,” Jamie jumped in. “The neighborhood’s mixed, restaurants, factories, art galleries, and bottling plants. Lots of traffic in and out of the area so vans coming and going wouldn’t get noticed. Nobody would stick out because anyone could have a reason to be down here.”

Roland nodded his head and moved off toward what was left of Mikhail’s crew. He asked questions, got his people to focus, took their minds off the tragedy of a few hours ago and put their heads back in the present. Sarkey would have enjoyed working with him on SWAT. Roland was a natural leader.
