Chapter 45

Romeo and Juliet

 -- Sunset Park, Brooklyn --

“Where does he find these places?”

“I don’t know, Agent Farks. You think they’d put us up at the Plaza?” Peter replied, sarcasm dripping.

After the battle at the Cuman Compound and their narrow escape they had gone to ground in a cold storage warehouse at water’s edge near the Brooklyn Sanitation Department.

“You’re no fun.”

“Why don’t you go talk to Sarkey. Oh, you can’t,” Peter snapped, walking away.

I hope you know what you’re doing boss.

They’d managed to entomb Essen in an underground ice vault with inch thick steel doors just as the sun rose. Sarkey was down there with Essen.

All alone with that thing in the dark.

 --

Sarkey and Stelya had volunteered to remain with her in the utter darkness. Roland kept Stelya away from Essen. He had a lot to learn and he didn’t trust the menial alone with Essen. She pouted but did as he ordered.

“This is life,” she stated.

I have to tell her to stop saying that.

Roland worried, not for Sarkey being alone in the dark with Essen. He had invoked the Second Law of the Law of Three, ordering no harm should come to any in his team unless they directly threatened him. Instead Roland worried about what they would do when Essen awoke. He now had to think about feeding her.

Do I have to find her humans to feed on? Does she find them? How do I stop her from taking innocents?

 --

“Travers is ready. He says he has six volunteers ready to come in with supplies on the two launches,” Peter stated, holding the satellite phone to his chest. “Fifteen minutes. What do you think?”

Irina checked her watch.

Sixty-three minutes to sunset. Fifteen minutes to get to shore. Another 15-20 hauling supplies. Maybe longer.

“If Thocomer hits any time between now and then they’ll either get caught in the open loaded down with supplies or get caught in the crossfire here.”

“Negative on the resupply,” Peter spoke into the phone. “We’ll wait for sunset.”

Peter clicked off.

“We’re on our own for now,” Peter said, stating the obvious.

Mr. Gray’s yacht waited offshore. Travers wouldn’t send it in until the sun set wary of Thocomer’s remaining soldiers and any Cuman Union survivors who might have eyes on the waterfront. No one knew how far Raul’s treachery extended. For now nothing would be left to chance.

“For now,” Irina agreed.

She left Peter to check on the others.

 --

“Damn shame,” Roland sighed.

Roland and Irina did the best they could to tend to everyone’s wounds. Bad luck for the team that Travers hadn’t gotten to this one yet with the logistics team. They spent the entire day without food or drink.

“Maria said he was a natural tracker,” Irina told Roland, pulling his jacket over Fen’s head. “She’ll miss him.”

Bloody goddam shame.
