Chapter 7: Grimm Studies

Yang: ‘Psst, Kai wake up’. Kai let out a soft groan as he reluctantly opened his eyes half confused, rubbing his left side where Yang had just jabbed him with her elbow.

Kai: “Uh…where am I again?” This time Blake replied from his right side, “The class already started”. ‘Huh? Class? What class? How did I even get here…’, these thoughts ran through Kai’s head as he stressed his brain trying to remember the events that took place up to this time.

He remembered going to bed a little early, because the amount of energy used up by his semblance in the fight against the Nevermore left him pretty worn out. He had gone to the dorms with the rest of his friends to find the assigned team rooms; well he would have his own room, being a lone student and all. The rooms of Team RWBY and Team JNPR were directly opposite each other, while Kai’s room was just beside Team RWBy’s. All things considered it was a highly convenient arrangement, an arrangement Kai was almost certain Professor Ozpin was behind.

As far as he knew, his sleep was peaceful…till the morning where he could vividly remember Yang banging on the door, yelling at him to get ready to go to their 9:00AM class, and when he glanced at the time then, it was 8:55AM. He made it to class with the rest of Teams RWBY and JNPR somehow, where he proceeded to continue his sleep, seeing as the teacher wasn’t even there yet.

???: “Monsters! Demons! Prowlers of the night!” a middle aged professor was now standing in front of the classroom, close to where Kai sat in the front row. The man continued, “Yes the creatures of Grimm have many names. But I merely refer to them as PREY, ha-ha!”

All around the class no one said a word in response to the professor’s poor attempt at a joke, in fact Kai could’ve sworn he heard a cricket chirp. At the far end of the chair to Kai’s left, Ruby’s head dropped from her supporting hand, and her silver eyes opened up as she looked around in confusion. ‘Looks like I’m not the only one giving in to the drowsiness’, Kai thought as he then faced Blake to ask, “Who is this guy anyway?” he gestured to the teacher.

Blake: “He said his name was Peter Port, and he’s going to take us in Grimm Studies for the rest of this year”. Kai nodded, “Oh”. Meanwhile, Professor Port decided to continue, “…And you shall too, upon graduating from this prestigious academy”, he began to pace along the front row, “Now as I was saying, Vale, as well as the other three kingdoms, are safe havens in an otherwise treacherous world. Our planet is teeming with creatures who would love nothing more than to tear you to pieces. And that’s where we come in…”, he then stopped in front of Kai, “…Huntsmen! Huntresses…”. At the word ‘huntresses’, Professor Port turned to face Yang and gave her a subtle wink. Yang rolled her eyes nervously, while Kai visibly scowled. As the professor walked away to the center, Kai tuned to the blonde, “what was that about?”. Yang simply shrugged, “That? Nah it was nothing, forget about it”. So she said but Kai could tell she was bothered by something. Still he did as she said and dropped it. 

Professor Port: “…Individuals sworn to protect those who cannot protect themselves. From what you ask? Why, the very world!” At that, some random kid who had been hunched over on his desk, suddenly stood up with his fist in the air, “AYE YEEEEAAAAH!”. Everyone tuned to look at the guy, who, realizing himself, sheepishly took his seat. ‘Kid must’ve been having some weird dream’, Kai thought, shaking his head.

Professor Port: “That is what you are training to become, but first, a story. A tale of a young handsome man…ME.  So blah-blah blah blah-blah-blah blah-blah…” By this point Kai had completely tuned out the teacher. Instead he looked around to see what everyone else was up too. Blake was surprisingly paying attention to Professor Port’s ramblings, Yang was also paying attention a little bit, and it looked like she was back to normal again. Kai wanted to talk to her about what happened earlier, but then decided to do it after the class. He turned to Weiss who was, nodding off? That’s a surprise. To her left Ruby was no longer sleeping but now furiously scribbling on a piece of paper giggling to herself uncontrollably. Weiss awoke finally to the sounds of Ruby’s snickering, and peered at her paper. It was at that moment Ruby raised the paper to show the rest of the Team (and Kai) what she had been doing. It was a horrible sketch of Professor Port. Upon seeing this, Blake, Yang and Kai joined in Ruby’s uncontrollable laughter.
