Chapter 9: The Bully Part 1

Glynda: “That’s enough.”

Kai watched the stage as Glynda Goodwitch stepped between the two students, bringing the sparring match to an end. His eyes moved to the downed student, his friend Jaune Arc, who had just had his ass completely handed to him by Cardin Winchester.

Glynda: “Students, as you can see, Mr. Arc’s aura has now dropped into the red…” Kai glanced up at the two holographic screens on opposite sides of the stage. The one on Jaune’s side bore his picture, and a bar underneath it which was almost empty, and blinking red. But on the other hand, the screen with Cardin’s picture had a full bright green bar. The match was practically a one sided beat down.

Glynda: “…In a tournament style duel, this would indicate that Jaune is no longer fit for battle, and the official may call the match.” Glynda then turned to Jaune, “Mr. Arc, it’s been weeks now. Please try to refer to your scroll during combat. Gauging your aura will help you decide when it is appropriate to attack, or when it is better to move to a more…defensive strategy. We wouldn’t want you to be gobbled up by a Beowolf now would we?”. Behind Glynda, Cardin scoffed, “Speak for yourself”. Kai scowled and called out to the teacher.

Kai: “Can I spar with Cardin next Miss Goodwitch?”. Cardin froze as he turned to see the person that had spoken. He definitely didn’t want to enter a duel with that guy; rumors were going round of how he single handedly defeated a Nevermore in the team selection test. Also he was the only student who was allowed to stay at Beacon despite not placing into a team in said test because, as the rumors said, he was too skilled for the school to let go. Cardin slowly turned to Glynda and awaited her answer.

Glynda: “Unfortunately Mr. Blaze, we have exhausted our allotted time for this lecture” She then faced the rest of the class, “Remember everyone, the Vytal Festival is only a few months away. It won’t be long before students from the other kingdoms start arriving in Vale, so keep practicing. Those who choose to compete in the combat tournament will be representing all of Vale. Class is dismissed”

Beside Kai, Pyrrah let out a deep sigh. He followed her gaze to Jaune, who was still sitting dejectedly on the stage.

Kai: “I know how you feel Pyrrah”

Pyrrah: “Huh”

Kai: “I’m talking about Jaune. I think it’s safe to say that he needs help”

Pyrrah: “Yeah…but I dunno…if I offer to help him he might take it the wrong way”

Kai: “Well it’s not like we can just sit here and watch him get humiliated all the time”

Pyrrah: “Look I’ll…think of something. In the meantime, just don’t talk about it to him”

Kai: “Alright alright. I’m leaving this to you. He’s your leader after all”

~Lunchtime~

Nora: “...In the middle of the night…”

Ren: “It was day”

Nora: “…We were surrounded by Ursai…”

Ren: “They were Beowolves”

Nora: “…Dozens of them!”

Ren: “There were two of them”

Teams JNPR and RWBY sat on opposite sides of the dining table, with Kai at the head, eating their food. Well not really. Blake was reading a book, Nora was telling her story, Yang was paying close attention to the story, Ren was sipping a cup of tea, Weiss was filing her nails, and Ruby, Kai and Pyrrah were watching Jaune, who was just running his spoon in circles through his plate, with concerned looks on their faces.

Pyrrah: “Jaune, are you okay?”. At the sound of his name, Jaune jerked up, “Huh? Oh yeah, why?”

Ruby: “It’s just that you seem a little…”

Kai: “…not okay”. At this point, everyone on the table had stopped whatever they were doing, and were now facing Jaune, who looked a little overwhelmed.

Jaune: “Guys I’m fine, seriously. Look,” he gave a thumbs-up and a smile which anyone could tell was definitely forced. He then shifted his attention to the table a little way from theirs. Kai followed his gaze to find Team CRDL harassing a rabbit Faunus girl.

Kai: “Cardin again?”

Pyrrah: “Jaune, Cardin’s been picking on you since the first week of school”. Jaune scoffed, “Cardin Winchester? He just likes to mess around and make practical jokes”. Ruby narrowed her silver eyes at Jaune, “He’s a bully”

Jaune: “Oh please, name one time he’s ‘bullied’ me”, he put the word ‘bullied’ in air quotes. The looks everyone on the table gave to him said that, without a doubt, Cardin had bullied Jaune on multiple occasions.

Kai: “The time he smacked away your books in the hallway, the time he stuck your shield in the classroom doorway, the time he shoved you into a rocket propelled locker and literally sent you shooting off into the sky”

Jaune: “Pfft, I didn’t land far from the school”

Pyrrah: “Jaune you know if you ever need help you can just ask”

Kai: “You have your teammates, and you also have the rest of us, your friends. We can help you out with anything”. Nora stood up with enthusiasm and slammed her fist into her palm, “Oh, we can break his legs!”

Jaune: “Guys, it’s cool. Besides it’s not like he’s only a jerk to me. He’s a jerk to everyone”. As if on cue, Cardin pulled one of the bunny ears on the Faunus girl, much to the amusement of his teammates Russel, Dove and Sky, causing her to cry out, “Ow, ow, ow”. Cardin did the exact opposite and pulled harder to which she spoke again through gritted teeth, “Please stop”

Cardin: “See I told you they were real”

Russel: “What a freak”. Still laughing, Cardin finally let the girl’s ears go, and she quickly walked away, covering her face in embarrassment as she left the cafeteria.

Kai: “I was literally two seconds away from heading over there myself and beating the crap out of that entire team”

Pyrrah: “Atrocious. I can’t stand people like him”

Blake: “He’s not the only one”. Yang rested her chin on her palm, “Man, it must be hard to be a Faunus”

Weiss: “Sorry to say this, but we better start moving. We still have Professor Oobleck’s class to take”. And at that, everyone groaned loudly and began to round up, and then they finally left for the next class.
