Kai launched into a back flip as the Deathstalker charged at him, twisting over the Grimm and landing safely behind it. The rest of the group had already taken off running towards the stone bridge in front of them. Pyrrah stopped and shouted, “Go!”, as she turned around and, transforming her lance into a rifle, shot at the Deathstalker to hold it back. She bought just enough time for Blake to move out of reach of the Grimm, and then she took off running with the rest of the group. Kai’s eyes searched the sky for the Nevermore, who he saw, to his utter dismay, was heading straight for the bridge.

Kai: “Guys watch out!”

The giant bird-like Grimm rammed into the bridge, creating a wide gap in it, with more than half of the group on one side; Ruby, Weiss, Yang, Nora and Jaune; facing the Nevermore, and the others; Pyrrah, Ren and Blake; facing the Deathstalker on the other side, and they weren’t doing too good.

Jaune: “Man we gotta get over there, they need help”. Nora came up beside him, “Let’s do this!”. Jaune looked down into the gap, “Yeah, uh, I can’t make that jump”.

She grinned, and pushed Jaune behind her. Nora then turned her blaster into a hammer, and slammed it down hard onto the edge of the bridge, which caused the part Jaune was standing on to break and rise up abruptly, shooting him like a catapult towards the Deathstalker. She then stood on the hammer herself and, using the blaster end of the head as a booster, shot herself in the same direction. Using that momentum, Nora smashed her hammer hard into the Deathstalker’s head and shot back immediately, just barely avoiding the giant stinger, but in the process she stumbled into Blake who was then sent flying off the bridge.

Blake grabbed the ribbon attached to her blade, and then threw the blade at the nearby ledge. Using this as a grappling hook she swung up to the Nevermore and unleashed a flurry of strikes on its body, much to no avail, before she jumped back down to meet Ruby, Yang and Weiss. Now it was equal, Pyrrah, Ren, Jaune and Nora faced the Deathstalker, while the girls continued to struggle against the Nevermore.  While all this was going on, Kai was glued to the spot, an internal struggle taking place at that very moment.

‘What am I even doing? Do I actually have to help them?’
‘Of course you do! That shouldn’t even be a question!’
‘But I don’t even need to pass this test. I could just walk away right now’
‘And leave them to die?!’
‘They’re not going to die. The teachers won’t let anything that bad happen.’
‘You don’t know that! Remember, Ozpin said the staff would monitor but won’t interfere’
‘They can do this themselves, they’re strong’
‘But your strength would make all the difference’
‘Ugh...I don’t know what to do...’

Glynda: “I don’t get it he’s just standing there. You said he would help them”

Ozpin: “I will admit, I am surprised at his actions. I assumed he would want to protect the bonds he formed with these students”, he took a closer look at the screen of his scroll, “But, it would seem that Kai himself is unaware of those bonds he has found. He’s in a dilemma. He doesn’t get too close to people, but he somehow, unknowingly, found himself growing fond of these students”. Ozpin looked up from the screen and gazed into the forest, “Ultimately, it’s all up to him now.”

~Back to the battle~

‘Come on Kai, you have to help them’
‘I’m not sure’
‘Are you really going to watch them die? The same way you watched your family die?’
‘…’
‘You know you want to help them. You saved Ruby from that Deathstalker, and you were ready to take on the Nevermore just earlier so they could get away’
‘I was just acting on instinct, my body moved on its own.’
‘You can’t abandon your friends Kai.’
‘My friends…?’
The events of the previous day and the events up till now suddenly hit him. Jaune throwing up on the ship, Ruby exploding, their hunt for the entrance hall, Yang’s teasing, Weiss’ sarcasm, Nora’s energetic chatter, and more. Annoying and frustrating as some of it was, he actually…had fun. In that moment he realized that these people had, indeed, become his friends. Determination covered his face, and with the help of his flames, Kai launched himself into the air, and landed on the giant pillar which previously held the Nevermore. And then, his eyes widened.
