Turning over onto your side, you groaned as your eyes caught sight of the alarm clock on your bedside table. It was almost two in the morning and, despite the fact that you'd been trying to sleep since eleven, you'd so far been unlucky.
You pulled your duvet tighter around your body, hoping to cocoon yourself into the comfort needed to fall asleep.
Just as you felt yourself finally drifting off, your phone began to buzz violently on your bedside table, and you immediately knew it could only be one person.
Groggily crawling out of your blanket cocoon to peer at it, you saw that you were correct — it was the Doctor.
"What is it?" you grumbled, propping yourself up on your elbow and hearing a sing-song laugh at the other end of the line.
"Nice to speak to you too, Y/N," the Doctor laughed, and you could almost picture his jokey smile as he said it, "I'm outside. Parked up on your driveway, got somewhere to show you."
You shook your head, momentarily forgetting that he couldn't see you, "Doctor, it's nearly three in the morning!"
He laughed, a rumbling chuckle that sent butterflies fluttering through your stomach, "The universe awaits, Y/N, why wait until morning?"
You giggled, hauling yourself up out of bed, "I'll be out in a minute, okay?"
"Fantastic."
You scrambled to your wardrobe, pulling out a comfortable outfit to wear for wherever the hell it was he was taking you. A pair of jeans and a sweater would suffice, you decided, and so within a few moments you'd changed, brushed your hair and were on your way out to the TARDIS.
"Y/N!" the Doctor called as you entered, arms crossed over his chest as he smirked at your unamused expression, "You look ever so pleased to see me."
Rolling your eyes, you padded over to him and let out a deep sigh as you rested your head on his shoulder, "Maybe if I'd had even a tiny bit of sleep, I would be a little perkier, Doctor."
His face switched now from amused to concerned, his brows furrowing as he curled an arm around you comfortingly, "Struggling to sleep again, Y/N? You know you're always welcome to just... stay with me on the TARDIS. I'd prefer that, actually."
You smiled up at him, warmth spreading throughout your body at his words. He was never a particularly openly emotional person, so you relished in moments like this where he made it clear that he did care deeply for you.
"You know I would if I could," you pouted, because though you loved travelling with him, you had work commitments and a life outside of those TARDIS doors. You loved his company, even at such ungodly hours and running on zero sleep, but you worried about becoming reliant on him.
The truth was, you slept far better in your room on the TARDIS anyway. The Doctor knew this too and had tried many a time to coax you into travelling with him on a more permanent basis.
"You can, you're always welcome," he pushed back a little hair from your face and pouted down at you exaggeratedly in an attempt to make you laugh a little, "And I can bring you back to visit whenever you're homesick."
You nodded, a yawn escaping your lips as the Doctor scooped you up and threw you over his shoulder now to carry you to the bedroom you usually occupied when you stayed onboard, "Hey!"
"Not giving you a choice, I'm afraid," he carried you into your room, one hand on the base of your back and one firmly grasping your upper thigh, "You need sleep. Now."
"If you'd stop waking me up in the middle of the night, I wouldn't be so bloody tired!" you laughed, shaking your head as he gently lifted you down to your bed from his shoulder, "We have all of time and space in our hands and you still choose three in the morning for an adventure, really?"
The Doctor shrugged, "S'pose you weren't actually asleep, were you? You'll sleep better in here anyway, your bed is hardly comfortable."
You blushed, thinking immediately of the fact that he knew this from all the times he'd lay beside you as you tried desperately to sleep. His presence always soothed you, despite his tendency generally to tease you, and you appreciated how much he genuinely went out of his way for you.
"Shut it, spaceman," you rolled your eyes, shuffling to one side of the bed and patting the space beside you, "Are you getting in, or what?"
He looked startled for a moment, before shrugging off his coat with a pleased-with-himself sort of smile gracing his features. You smiled as his body sank into the mattress beside you, heart warming as you felt him hesitate to touch you so as to avoid making you uncomfortable.
"Is this okay?" he asked, his voice more nervous than you'd ever heard it before as he tentatively relaxed into a comfortable position.
"Of course, Doctor," You shimmied over slightly so that your body ever so slightly touched the side of his, and you felt him tense momentarily, before relaxing into a more comfortable demeanor and easing closer to you.
"Oh, and Doctor?" you asked, voice barely above a whisper as you fought off sleep, to which he hummed a quiet, "Yes?"
"I'll stay."
