CHAPTER FIVE. ⎯⎯ UNORTHODOX TEACHINGS
❚DEFENSE AGAINST THE DARK
ARTS CLASSROOM, 1994"ALASTOR MOODY." THE heavy-set man turned his back on the class, taking a piece of chalk and writing his name on the blackboard. "Ex-auror. Ministry malcontent. And your new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. I'm here because Dumbledore asked me, end of story, goodbye, the end. Any questions?" The class remained silent. "When it comes to the dark arts, I believe in a practical approach. But first, which of you can tell me how many unforgivable curses there are?"
A weary look crossed Lyra's face when she heard the words practical approach and unforgivable curses near each other. It seemed Pansy Parkinson and Lavender Brown thought the same thing. The four were at the same desk, crowded, as it only seated two, but comfortable in each other's presence nonetheless.
"Three, sir." Hermione looked back to Lyra with an anxious expression.
Alastor Moody turned back to the board, beginning to write. "And they are so named?"
"Because they are unforgivable," her slight voice crack sounded through the room and Lyra wanted nothing more than to rescue her friend from the awkwardness of her conversation. "The use for any one of them will-"
"Earn you a one-way ticket to Azkaban."
Lyra brought her voice to the lowest it could go, "Yeah, ask my father. Maybe I'll bring him in for a show and tell."
Pansy snorted, burying her face in the textbook in front of her, and Lavender used Lyra's shoulder to muffle her laugh, who was biting her lip to refrain from smiling at her friends' reactions.
"Is something humourous back there, girls?"
"Not at-" Lavender wheezed as Lyra struggled to get the words out "-not at all professor."
Moody gave the group a lingering stare before returning to his speech, "Now, the Ministry says you're too young to see what these curses do. But I say different! You need to know what you're up against! You need to be prepared! You need to find another place to put your chewing gum besides the underside of your desk, Mr. Finnigan!"
The class all turned to Seamus, "No way. The old codger can see out the back of his head."
Suddenly Pansy ducked, pulling Lyra down with her, causing her to pull down Lavender. Chalk flew right over their heads, landing beside Seamus. "And hear across classrooms!"
Crabbe looked scared out of his mind, eyes huge. It was a little too easy to frighten him at times. Lyra gave him a small smile and gestured to Blaise who put a comforting hand on his shoulder. Moody walked closer, standing right in front of Harry's desk, but looking at the desk behind him. The one Lyra occupied. "So, which curse shall we see first? Weasley!"
