Emily - She is a ten year old homeless black girl with one friend in the world; Sam the Market Man (well, he is a boy really but that doesn't really have the same ring to it...) Freda - She is a bored, rich housewife who is constantly dragged to the most peasant-ridden street in London by her infernal husband whilst he does business. Well, she thinks she is rich anyway, but with her husband gambling away more of their fortune every day, how long will it be before she is homeless like Emily herself...?
Freda needs an 'extra pair of eyes' watching her husband always, to make sure he is doing exactly as he says he is. Will she need Emily's help to avoid becoming like Emily herself? And is this exactly what Emily hoped for, or will everything end in disaster?
