PART 16
The doorbell rings downstairs and moaning, I flip the comforter over my head. I want to sleep for the next ten years. But as the front door opens audibly, I listen intently.
“She doesn’t want to see you.” Seth.
“I know.” Isaac. My heart stops beating. Either that, or it’s now beating so hard that it doesn’t feel like it is at all. I sit up and crane my neck to hear what comes next. “I just wanted to, uh, drop this off for her.” Rustling. Silence. I have never heard Isaac use filler words before.
“Fine.”
“Thanks.”
“Yeah.” The creak of the door as it gets closer to shutting. Then, Seth. “Oh, and Isaac?”
“Yeah.”
“If you really do want her, you should keep trying. She’s honestly not that hard to crack.”
Well.
“I am trying.”
“I know.”
“Thanks. Seth.”
“Sure.”
