Even with Hiei beside me I found myself uneasy. I fidgeted and stayed as close as possible

"Are you going to tell me what's wrong or am I going to have to dig through your mind for it?"

"Nothing." I tried to laugh it off "I'm being paranoid."

"Nuni if you sense something is off you shouldn't ignore it." Kurama met my eyes seriously.

"I just..." I sighed "it feels like there's someone following me. Like... someone I know."

"Where is it coming from?" Hiei's hand rested on his sword and his eyes scanned the area.

"I have no idea, it's just there." I leaned into Hiei for some form of comfort I still felt uneasy.

No one will touch you He didn't seem worried at all, more like annoyed that anyone would dare challenge him.

"I might have an idea who it is." Hiei didn't look at either of us when he said it, I had the idea that he didn't really mean for us to hear it but Kurama's ears are amazing and I heard it through our link rather than his actual words.

"It's no one you should worry about." Hiei assured me and that actually did make me feel better. He was annoyed so it clearly wasn't a threat but that also meant there was someone there after all.

Relax Hiei's voice was always gentle in my head trust me

Trust me, they may be the most dangerous words in existence. I don't know if I'm there yet, trust involves so much. I don't feel danger from Hiei, as funny as that is, I feel safe with him but does that mean I trust him? Trust is an entirely different beast, but he has already seen things no one else knows about.

Trust me he said again, his eyes on me.

"How much farther are we going today?" I asked instead of giving Hiei a real answer.

"Through those trees is that last bit of life we'll see for two days, we'll rest here and collect what we need." He held tight to my hand. "Kurama, as you've proven time and again you cannot be trusted to watch her, clear the area, I will set up a temporary campsite for Nuni."

"You're gonna set up a campsite for me?" I asked doubtfully. "Do you know how to pitch a tent... or have anything to be constructed into a tent on hand?"

"Kurama secured one while we were at the place. I imagine you don't need me to do everything for you. I'll watch you." He let my hand go and opened the backpack Kurama gave him. Inside was the most basic of tent set ups. Basically a piece of cloth and a ground tarp. Not even the sticks were included.

"You want to cut me some support sticks?" I asked Hiei holding the shapeless cloth up.

"What size?"

I held the fabric up and, it was a good bit taller than me.

"Like five feet long, and five of them please and thank you."  I laid out the tarp and Hiei moved faster than the speed of light it seemed like.

"You don't have to move so fast all the time, you show off."

He appeared beside me a moment later with the sticks cut, leaves falling around him and the tree above us missing a few limbs.

"I think I've been going slow with you, but I'm unfamiliar with actually finding enjoyment in another being, most people I simply tolerate."

I froze "did you just... make a joke... about liking me?"
