On a cold winter night, the tall trees overshadowed the moon's light. As a crimson red trailed on the dirt ground beneath me, a woman grabbed me and ran as fast and as far as she could, deeper into the trees. As cries and flash of torches muddled my vision.
Men encased in armor and wielding bows pursued behind us, the heavy snow covering our trail, but they presided. As the snow became heavier, the woman slipped, and I plunged into the snow as she attempted to get back up with the viking men still behind her. Left with no chance she pushed me down the Highlands sending me plummeting to the earth.
As my hand reached out for her one last time, tears welled up in her melancholy eyes, and the snow that fell seemed to quicken as I descended— My heart felt like it was pumping outside my chest as I snapped awake, as well as my breathing was erratic,
I took a deep breath and looked around the room, recounting that this was my first mission with Thorfinn, as we were running through the forest looking for shelter from the dogs,Thorfinn was hit with an arrow, which resulted in him losing his balance. I tried to grab him, but the sudden weight threw me off balance.and the next thing I remember was waking up in this room. I looked beside me and saw Thorfinn, who had a visible scar where the arrow had struck him. "Thorfinn, Thorfinn wake up," I yelled as I began to shake him. He opened his eyes and sat up when he heard the door creak open and watched an older woman and her daughter walk in with fresh water and a basket of food, He glared at the two women setting the table with smiles on their faces, I stood up and walked over to the tables, where I sat next to the older woman, and Thorfinn scowled at us until stomach growled.
After a while, the older woman ushered him to the table. He came and sat beside the older woman's daughter. They paused for a few seconds before pouring us soup and handing us bread.
I dug myself into the food without thinking twice, stuffing my face with soup and bread. Thorfinn, on the other hand, sat at the table for a moment before scratching his head, causing small insects to jump out. The two ladies became terrified and hauled both of us away from the table, but that didn't stop me from snatching more bread from the basket.
Now we were sitting outside, letting the older woman brush our hair while she spoke about something that neither myself nor Thorfinn could comprehend, I turned to Thorfinn as he began to speak "I... don't understand what you're saying, I'm not English." Thorfinn spoke in a language I didn't fully understand, but whatever he said made the woman burst out laughing.
The laughter had been cut short as I saw a danish soldier in the distance, I tapped Thorfinn's shoulder and directed his attention to the soldier, as I grabbed a handful of dirt, the soldier approached the woman, and I kept my head down and waited for Thorfinn's signal, but instead I felt the warm hands of the older woman on my shoulder as the soldier left.
When we could no longer see the man in the distance thorfinn and i walked back inside the house and gathered of belongings, thorfinn kept watch at the windows while i packed more bread into porches, as the day quickly turned to night me and thorfinn were prepared to send the signal back to the ship.
Thorfinn burned two torches and passed one to me. I tapped his shoulder and pointed towards the woman, knowing we could leave them here. Thorfinn sighed and pointed towards the woods before saying, "you...you.run away." Thorfinn spoke to them in the strange language again, but all the women did was stare at us as we put on our cloaks and ran towards the village.
