"Ray, don't speak unless you're spoken to!!!"

"Stop talking. I've better things to do than listen to you."

"Ray, shut up - I have work to do."

This wasn't an uncommon occurrence, him being ignored. Being stripped of his own voice. It was a daily routine he had grown accustomed to over the years of living with her. It was a part of his life that he perceived as unavoidable.

The rants, the cursing, the harsh orders - when had his life become so horribly dark? Truely, he couldn't recall a time when his world was not bathed in fear and despair. She'd always been a constant, even if he so desperately wished she wasn't.

It was repetitive, mind-numbing, even listening to her voice holler, and scream at him. Honestly, the reoccurring scolding's felt like some sort of twisted nightmare, like Ray was dreaming the entire thing up of his own free will.

But he wasn't.

He knew that for a fact.

Each yell, scoff, or harmful comment was embedded into his memory, reminding him each day that silence was the only way to survive the hell he had been placed in. Trust and communication meant nothing to someone walking on such a thin tightrope. He had everything to lose, and with one simple mistake, he could.

So he needed to stay silent.

No matter what.

"RAY DON'T IGNORE ME!!"

It was happening again.

The mental abuse that came with living with her. The spark of anger in her eyes as she flailed her arms around in a frantic frenzy sent the raven into an emotionless state; her voice bounced off of the decorated walls, as Ray stood there, watching her pace towards him, a disgusted expression etched onto her face.

"WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU!?!?" She raged; her violet eyes were like daggers, slicing into him.

What had he done this time?

What had he done to get this woman so worked up?

He couldn't even recall...

It had only struck 8:00AM when she came stomping into her office, wearing her usual attire for work with a prominent irked face. He had barely just gotten to school by that point, let alone done anything to irritate his mother in any way, shape, or form beforehand. Ray hadn't even looked in her general direction before he was being torn a new one.

Perhaps she was just in one of her agitated moods again...

Ray sighed, and the perplexing emotions that filled the room lingered in the air as the raven shifted to anything and everything to avoid her menacing gaze.

He was used to this. It had been a reoccurring problem ever since he was 5 years old, where the cruel reality that he was despised by his own mother was brought to light.
