CEDRIC'S PERSPECTIVE

"...not just anyone is a wizard. Our world needs you."

I meant it when I said that, but I quickly wish I hadn't. Did I just cross a line or make things awkward? Y/N wasn't responding.

The only sounds in the room were the crackling fire, the blood roaring in my ears, and my heart pounding so loud I swear she could hear it. My body still hurt like bloody hell, but I ignored the pain and allowed myself to shift my weight closer to Y/N. I shouldn't have left the infirmary so early but I felt an urge to be with her.

At this point she was so close I could smell her hair. It was something earthy and fresh, like flowers after rain.

When Y/N finally looked back at me I noticed she was blushing. Her eyes were beautiful in the low light. The flickering fire made them sparkle. It felt like the entire world had slowed, and we were the only two people in it.

The tension in the air was so thick you could... cut it with a knife, I think that's the muggle saying.

I allowed myself to steal a glance at her lips. They were so plump and soft. Should I close the gap? Should I speak? Should I–

BANG!

My bedroom door flew open, and Poults strutted in with a flourish. Oh, shit, he probably didn't think I was going to be here tonight.

"Elaine?" exclaimed Y/N, shocked. Elaine Barrows giggled. She was clinging to Poults's arm like a sloth. I could have sworn I saw her with Woods last week... but you never know with that Barrows girl.

"Oops! Didn't mean to bother you two. We can leave and give you two some privacy if you want!" she said with a smirk.

I wanted to say yes.

"No, no, I was just leaving." Y/N gathered up her books in a hurry and rose from the floor. Shit. I must have done something wrong, again. Like that night last week, when I asked her to sit with me after the party. I wasn't even thinking of Y/N like that in the moment, but it nevertheless hurt my feelings a bit when she immediately shot me down. Maybe I was just too drunk.

"Might have to take a raincheck, Shale," Elaine said with a wink, ruffling Shale's dark curly hair and letting go of his arm. "Come on Y/N!"

Elaine escorted Y/N out of our room so quickly I barely got a chance to wave goodbye. She looked over her shoulder at me as Elaine pushed her out the door, and I heard Elaine say, "we have a LOT of catching up to do!"

Shale shut the door behind them and sighed exasperatedly.

"Really thought I was gonna get shagged tonight, mate," he said, rolling his eyes and grinning. "Isn't she hot?"

"Who?" I asked distractedly. "Elaine?"

"YES, you dumb bloke!" he called out, jumping on his bed and tossing his balled up sweater at me. I swatted it away and grinned.

"Distracted by that Y/N girl, aren't ya?"

I unbuttoned my shirt, slipped it off, and pulled on some soft boxers before crawling into bed. "I didn't even know who she was until the night of that party. How can you be distracted by someone you barely know?" I was intending to put Y/N out of my mind. She clearly wasn't interested.

"Easy, I do it all the time," scoffed Shale. "You'll need a date to the Yule Ball anyway. It's our last one, can't have you skipping out or going alone."

Shale was right. I did need a date for the Yule Ball. But that was months away, and I knew for sure that I wouldn't be asking Y/N. I can take a hint.
