I was driving up the road to Grandma's house, catching my breath. Once I got there, I carried my burgundy suitcase and picnic basket up to the front porch. The moon was shining over here above the trees. Grandma opened the door, smiling warmly.
"Hi, Candy. Why don't you come in?"
"Hey, Grandma. I brought you something."
She stepped aside, and I entered the house. I put my suitcase and picnic basket down in the living room. That same gray couch was still there. I sat on it, opening the picnic basket. She sat next to me, watching as I put the food on her brown wooden coffee table.
I unwrapped the foil on some fried chicken and two baked potatoes. They were still warm enough to eat, somehow. Grandma went into the dining room, and came back with two forks. By the time I unwrapped the rest of the food, she sat back down. I smiled down at the homemade dinner.
"How's your mama doin', sweetheart?" She asked, biting into her chicken leg.
I sat up. "She's fine. Just a little hypervigilant."
"Oh, I see. She still remembers that incident in the forest."
My mama took many walks in the forest, but only one time did she see what she thought was a giant wolf. She never went near forests again. When my phone vibrated, I pulled it out of my black clutch. A message from her was at the center of my screen.
Did you bring your blade and silver bullets?
Of course, I took both with me. I sent an automatic 'yes' in response. Maybe that'll settle her worries. I put my phone down on the couch and started eating a chicken wing. A howl outside the house broke the brief silence.
Grandma glanced at the window behind the TV nonchalantly. I raised my eyebrows. The neighbor needed to put their dog back inside.
"Let me show you where your room is." Grandma said.
I took my eyes off the window. "Okay."
I followed her down the huge hall, to a bedroom. She opened the door, and smiled when I walked in. There were two twin size beds, a cherry red recliner, and a dark brown dresser in here. It looked cozy.
A smile grew on my face. The scent of apple cinnamon filled my nose. It was so familiar. Grandma chuckled.
"You like it?"
"Yeah, I love it." I admitted.
"I put a radio in here, so you can drown out the noise."
After she walked out, I heard the howling again. I sighed heavily. That better not last all night.
