The wind was blowing hard outside. I just took my mashed potatoes out of the microwave. As I walked through the dining room, Grandma rushed past me to the kitchen. I sat down on the couch, and took a bite out of my chicken wing. Seeing family drama unfold in 'A Wife's Nightmare' eased my mind.
Grandma came back, and plopped down on the couch. She leaned back, sighing heavily. What happened? Just as the commercials came on, I turned to face her.
"Did the door get broken again?"
"No, baby. I was just blocking it," she answered calmly.
Both our phones chimed. A follow request and a message from Instagram popped up on the screen. I went to Maula Woods' page, and scrolled through photos of those women from Piggly Wiggly. In her profile photo, she was smiling with Axel in front of a tree. I read her message, and my expression softened.
I'm sorry for judging you. You're not trouble at all.
As soon as the movie came back on, I heard barking outside. Grandma turned the tv up. I glanced at the window, raising my eyebrows. Didn't Axel take the wolf somewhere else?
I walked back to the kitchen, still holding my plate. The door had a broomstick blocking the center of it. I sighed in relief, and devoured the rest of my food. At least, we were safe.
Just as I threw the plate away, I noticed a black wolf staring directly at me. The lights suddenly turned off. I rushed back to the living room. Grandma got up, and handed me my phone.
"I'll call Axel. You go downstairs and check the garage."
"Why?" I asked.
"Just do it, girl."
I walked down to the garage, using the flashlight from my phone. Once I slowly stepped in there, I was ambushed with the smell of dog. The garage door was only halfway closed. Fuck.
My light landed on the gray wolf. He approached me from across the room. I climbed on top of the car. My rubber band snapped, making my black hair fall around my face. The wolf snickered as he came closer to the car. I pulled my knees up to my chest. The wolf sniffed my blue skirt.
He looked up at me. "Calm down. I won't hurt you. As long as you do one thing for me."
"Like what?" I asked, shining the light in his face.
"Help me find the man who killed my father. And I will leave you alone."
