The sun was still high in the sky when the doorbell sounded, indicating that someone was at my front door.

I dropped my pen on the desk and scrunched up my eyebrows as I lazily got up from the chair, dragging my slippers against the hardwood floor of my apartment.

It was unusual for me to have visitors, especially at that time of day, so when I faced an elegant woman and a smiling child, I got even more confused.

"Chris?" I asked, letting my sister in. 

Lily; my niece, was fast to jump into my embrace.

"What are you guys doing here?" I smiled, tickling Lily's sides. "Aren't you supposed to be at school?"

"No." Lily giggled, wiggling around to escape me, and I finally put her down, watching her run to the living room.

"What's going on? You're a little early today." I turned to my sister as she stood in front of me. Her black wavy hair was pinned pack at the front, and there was a smile on her face. She had on a knee-length tight dress and a blouse, paired with some heels. 

"They finished early because the ninth graders have an event for parents and need the auditorium." She motioned her head to the living room where her daughter was. "These kids are so loud you can hear them all the way down, so the teachers decided it was best if they go home." She chuckled, walking to the kitchen island to sit down on the stool.

"So you got off work to pick her up? You could've called, you know?"

"I told them I have a family emergency and they let me go." Christina shrugged it off. "They won't miss me anyway. Had your coffee yet?" 

"No, but I can make it now." I said and put the water to boil.

Christina got rid of her heels and walked after me, eyes immediately set on the bouquet that rested on the counter.

"Who are these from?" Christina leaned down to smell the flowers and wiggled her eyebrows at me. "You're seeing someone?"
