The room was empty.

Hoseok sighed in relief before dragging his suitcases into the room. He shut the door behind him and chose the neat, untouched bed. The other bed was a little messy, with charging cables littering the nightstand. There was a camera on a shelf on the wall, as well as some papers laying unorganized on the desk.

Hoseok pretended not to see the pink stuffed bunny on the bed, unsure if his roommate would be embarrassed about that sort of thing.

He pulled out his phone, sending a quick text to Seokjin.

Hoseok:
The school is huge

The response came almost immediately.

Jin Hyung:
y'know what else is huge 😏

Hoseok:
??

Jin Hyung:
nevermind nevermind have u made a new friend yet????? haVE I BEEN REPLACED 💔👄💔

Hoseok:
I'm not going to replace you

I haven't made a new friend but the welcoming committee was nice

You didn't tell me that your mom was the headmistress

Jin Hyung:
im full of secrets 😎

also i DID tell u once ‼️‼️ it's not my fault u didn't remember 🙄

Hoseok:
Mhm

I'll text you later, I need to unpack

Hoseok shut off his phone and sat down heavily on his bed, exhaling. He was about to start unpacking when the door opened. The boy at the door froze when he caught sight of Hoseok. He backed up, glanced at the room number, and entered again. Hoseok tried not to notice his flushed cheeks and red eyes, like he'd been crying or something. His black hair was also a bit messy.

The boy's face broke out into a smile, though. "You must be my new roommate!"

Hoseok nodded. "Yes."

"Cool!" The boy stepped inside, shutting the door behind him. He glanced at Hoseok's suitcases. "Do you need some help unpacking?"

"No. Thank you."

He nodded. "So, what's your name?"

"Jung Hoseok." Hoseok paused, before stammering out, "Uh- and what's yours?"

"I'm Jeon Jeongguk!" He chirped. "What school did you go to before? I don't think I've seen you around these parts."

"I was homeschooled," Hoseok answered. He fidgeted with his hands. "Are you. . . are you sad?"

Jeongguk frowned. "Why would you say that?"

"You just. . . well, your eyes were red, and you just looked like. . . " Hoseok trailed off when he saw Jeongguk's expression turn into a grimace. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up, uh—"

"No, no, it's fine," said Jeongguk. He shrugged. "I was just feeling a little bit under pressure, but that's alright. Anyways, can I see your schedule? I wanna see if we have classes together!"

Hoseok unfolded his schedule and handed it to Jeongguk. After reading it, Jeongguk exclaimed, "Oh, we have Literature together third block on every second day!"

Hoseok blinked at how quickly words spilled out of Jeongguk's mouth. He really didn't process a single word of that sentence. "Uh. . . Is that class hard?"

Jeongguk shook his head. "Not really. Ooh, you have painting! Ceramics, and music. . . " He frowned. "So you did these all when you were homeschooled?"

"Uh, no, I, uh. . ." Hoseok shrugged a little helplessly as he made eye contact with Jeongguk's doe eyes. "Didn't really do any of these at home. I'm sort of new to it all."

"Oh! Then they'll probably assign you a helper for some of these. Ceramics is pretty easy, you'll get it quickly. Music is kinda hard, but maybe Yoongi hyung'll help you!"

"You know Yoongi?"

"Everyone knows Yoongi. He's one of the coolest guys here." Jeongguk's eyes shone with admiration. "He gave me piano lessons even though I'm not in music class."

"Uh, is there. . ." Hoseok trailed off. He bit his lip. "Is there stuff I should know about the school? I've read all the rules but is it like the movies? With popular kids and nerds?"

Jeongguk giggled. "Nah, not really. There are a few very popular kids though. You'll probably see them around."

Hoseok nodded. "I, uh, I should get to unpacking my stuff."

"Right!" Jeongguk pulled earbuds out of his pocket and headed to his bed. He paused and swatted the pink bunny onto the floor, out of sight. He turned back to Hoseok, blushing in embarrassment. "If you need any help, just ask."

Hoseok nodded and smiled a little. Mentally, he congratulated himself on a successful social interaction.

Jeongguk seemed nice. He was cheerful. Sort of like Seokjin, but considerably less chaotic.

Hoseok pulled out his phone, quickly shooting Seokjin another text.

Hoseok:
I think I made a new friend

He shut off his phone, smiling softly to himself as he glanced at Jeongguk, who was sitting on his bed with his eyes closed, nodding his head to his music.

Tomorrow was the first day, and Hoseok hoped it would go well.
