After collecting our timetables from Mrs. Kaye, our school's secretary, Kayleigh and I walked to my locker.

"Have you seen Kristen yet today? We have a meeting with Coach to discuss cheerleading tryouts tomorrow." I asked Kayleigh.

"Hmm.. I think I saw her messing around with Tom and Zachary earlier by the bleachers, but I could be mistaken." Kayleigh replied with a shrug.

"Alright well I have to go find her before the bell! Let me know what happens in homeroom and I'll see you in English?" I said.

"Alright! Toodles!" Kayleigh said mocking Paige.

I burst into giggles and walked towards to gym.

As I walked through the hallways I was stopped several times by people congratulating me on getting head cheerleader and asking how my summer was.

I finally reached the gym and as I opened the door I heard screams of "No!" and "Stop!" and a lot of giggling.

"Well well well, what do we have here?" I teased.

In front of me stood a red-faced Kristen and Andrew Summers, a basketball player and one of my closest friends, who is holding a ball above his head away from Kristen. It was all very cute.

Upon realising who had interrupted, they both visibly relaxed. Andrew's face broke into a huge grin.

"Ella baby, look at you! Long time no see, eh?" Andrew said in a teasing fashion.

"Yeah, thank god! The last two weeks have been heaps better without you and your stench!" I said whilst plugging my nose for dramatic effect.

Andrew feigned hurt and I laughed.

Kristen looked up at me and squealed.

"Elllaaaaaaaa!" She screamed running towards me. She pulled me into a huge bear hug.

"Hey K, how are you?" I asked laughing.

"I'm so good! So excited about being deputy head cheerleader this year! Have you heard from Hazel?" She asked.

What a silly question. Hazel Smith is my best friend and has been since kindergarten. We met when we were playing in the sandbox and I was fascinated with her dark curly hair; so I pulled it. Really hard. We've been best friends ever since. I grinned at the memory.

"Yeah of course I have silly! She's not coming back from Florida until wednesday so she won't be here for tryouts." I explained with a frown.

Hazel was our flyer and vital for cheerleading tryouts. We need to see if the new girls can reproduce her positions.

"Damn. What are we gonna do?" Kristen replied chewing on her lip.

"Well, there's always Zoey, she's alright?" I pondered.

"Hmm.. Yeah I guess she'll be okay!"

With that sorted, Andrew left with a ruffle of my hair and a kiss on the cheek for Kristen.

"Something going on there?" I asked with a wink.

"Erm..." Kristen blushed. "We started dating a couple of weeks ago"

I was shocked. Kristen and Andrew? "Why didn't you tell me? Oh my god! That's adorable!"

"Oh you know, 'cause you two are such good friends and all. I thought it might be weird."

Was she crazy?

"K I always knew you were a whack job but this takes things so a whole new level." I chuckled.

With a blush, she smiled.

"It's good to have you back Els." She said with a quiet voice.

I grinned. "Well it's good to be back! Now c'mon lets go find Coach before she kicks our asses.

-

Coach Black wasn't what you'd call a soft woman. She was a woman whom if you crossed her in the street you'd make sure not to even breathe around her. But to Kristen and I, she was about as close to a friend as you get with a teacher. With her short blonde hair that she always has pulled back into a pony tail and her razor sharp cheekbones she had a reputation amongst the student body as have a "look that kills".

"Okay girls, seeing as you already seem to have things organised between you for the try outs, I'm going to move on to the real reason I called you here." She started in a serious tone. There was a dead look in her eyes.

Kristen and I glanced at each other. My worry was mirrored in her expression.

Coach Black continued, "Well as you know, it's hard times for everyone, and recently one of our sponsors has gone bankrupt."

I gasped. I really don't like where this is going.

"So what does this mean for us? Surely you can't cut cheerleading?!" Kristen cried!

Coach sighed.

"That's the last thing I want to do. That's why I called you here. Ella I understand you were deputy president of the student council year?"

I nodded serenely, unsure of where she was going with this.

"Well I'm sure you have plenty of experience with fundraising then, yes?"

Oh! Now I get it! We need to fundraise! I can do that!

"Oh yeah! Tonnes! We managed to raise enough to build a school and a water pump in Zimbabwe last year!" I announced. I could help but notice the pride that was laced in my voice. So what? We worked our butts off to raise all that money!

Coach chuckled. "Well them I'm sure you and the rest of the squad will be able to fundraise to make up the funds we're missing now?"

"Hell yeah!" Squealed Kristen!

I was shocked that she would act like that in front of a teacher; even if it was only Coach!

"Okay, well that's good. So here's your task. You've got until Friday to come up with your first fundraiser! Good luck girls!"

Game on!
