I woke up to find a figure hovering over my head. Opening my eyes, I came face to face with Tom, who was grinning like an idiot.
"You should stop doing that," I said to him, letting out a yawn and stretching my body. "It's not good. Imagine if it was someone else. You would have given that person a heart attack."
"I came to check on you, but you were still sleeping with loud snores and drool coming out of your mouth. I didn't want to wake you up, or let's say mom decided against it. She said you were a bit tired before you slept yesterday."
"Yeah, I was," I sighed deeply at the thought of yesterday.
"Don't tell me you've started another research proposal. You told us that you will not do anything work-related when you get here. You promised even," he folded his arms across his chest.
I smiled, "I promise you, it's not that," I said assuredly.
"So what is it? What's got you all worked up?" He eyed me suspiciously.
"Nothing serious, dear. By the way, how was your exam?" I asked, both to divert his attention and to inquire about his academics.
I love staying updated on their studies so I can encourage them to do better or reward them with little gifts to commend their efforts. They have been doing well so far, but I still ask, just in case.
"The exam was fine, although I fell sick during exams. Thank God it's over now," he heaved a sigh of relief.
"See this one o! Did you think it would be easy?" I teased.
"Sweetheart, sorry to break your heart, but you still have a long way to go. You're in your third year, and you still haven't gotten used to exam stress?" I asked, reminiscing about my own university days. I graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife in Osun State, Nigeria, with a second-class upper division in Mathematics. Jesuseyi, my sister, is currently in her fifth year studying architecture, and she's also on track for a second-class upper division.
It wasn't easy. Whoever said studying was easy? It takes a lot of effort and determination.
"Egbon mi (my elder sister), it's not that far anymore. I'll be graduating soon," he said, smiling and showing off his dimples.
"Amin o! (Amen!) I clapped my hands together cheerfully. Make sure you graduate with a first-class. Don't be lazy like me," I said to encourage him.
"I'll try my best, ma," he assured me, which made me happy. I simply replied with an "Okay."
Tom turned to leave my room but stopped at the door and said, "I forgot, Mom said I should tell you that food is ready." He left and closed the door carefully behind him.
Ah! Food is ready? How will I survive this breakfast now? I questioned myself. We must all gather at the dining table to eat. I may not have been home for years, but I know that hasn't changed.
I decided to take a quick bath and brush my teeth because I wouldn't want to keep them waiting. After about 10 minutes, I was done. I wore my denim shorts with a loose white tank top and paired them with white sandals. I'm not one for too much makeup, so I settled for powder and lip gloss. I did a once-over in the mirror and headed out to the dining area.
