I was shoved roughly into my cell, hard enough that I landed on my hands and knees. There was the sound of metal against rock as my crown tumbled off my head and rolled on the stone floor. I glared at the peasant who had pushed me, and he glared back at me with a spiteful hate in his eyes. Geez, what had I ever done to him?

He smirked just a bit, and I felt a bit of my bravado slipping away as he gloated, "Well well well. Finally, you'll get what you deserve. Tomorrow you'll have a trial, just for formality, and then you'll be sentenced to death... there's a gallows tree with your name on it, Moondian."

I gulped. "What have I ever even done to you people?!"

"Starved us. Sent us into poverty. Mercilessly killed our people for no reason... mercilessly killed my wife for no reason."

          "What?! When?!"

"She was a servant here. You killed her for no reason one day... or perhaps for reasons of entertainment." He snarled. Slowly, I started to understand.

"My uncle... my uncle did that, not me. My uncle has been ruling this kingdom until last week--"

"Your uncle did no such thing. By law, you have been ruling this entire time." He interrupted.

"By law, I COULDN'T rule this whole time... why did you think I had a bloody coronation, huh mate?" I snapped, starting to lose my calm.

"It is a formality. Law decree 54 states so." I barked out a harsh laugh.

"There IS no law decree 54, idiot. The law decrees only reach to 26."

"Yeah, and I'm a dragon." He deadpanned, then said offhandedly, "Anyway, I suggest you save it for your trial. Have a good night, Moondian. See you at the gallows." He spun on his heel and sauntered off, smirking. I stared after him. There was only 26 law decrees... wasn't there?

"Killer King, huh?" I heard a voice say behind me. I jumped, having not realized I was sharing a cell. I turned around to find a smirking girl in the corner of the cell, hidden in the shadows. I could just barely make out her silhouette, but from the looks of it she was about 15.

"Shut up." I snapped. I wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone.

She stepped forward into the feeble light. She had flaming untamed red hair, and amber eyes that sparkled with mischief. Her clothes were covered in dirt and grime, but I could tell from the style of them that she had come from the streets. "Well someone's cranky. Ya know, imma die tomorrow too." She said, as if we were talking about the weather.

"I'm not sticking around to die." I said suddenly, surprising myself. Normally I would have been more than fine with dying... but I refused to give these gits that satisfaction.

"Those locks are unpickable, if that's what ya're thinking. Trust me, I've tried." She shrugged, showing me a pin. I snickered, and held my hand to the cell's lock, taking a deep breath.

My magic was weak, and almost gone. My uncle had taken-- stolen-- it from me. Nevertheless, I closed my eyes, trying to feel the magic inside of me, and connect it to the magic all around me. "Claditus Apartus." I whispered, willing the magic to work with me. For a split second nothing happened, then the cell door swung open with a loud creak. I glided out, not bothering to look back at the girl. To my dismay, I heard her footsteps behind me.

"You have magic?" she asked in an awed voice.

"Barely. I can only do small spells." I said shortly, hoping she'd get the hint and leave me alone. And I think she did get the hint. I just think she didn't care.

"Wow. Magic is so rare... but aren't all wizards powerful?"

                  "My uncle stole my magic."

"That's possible?" She asked. I shrugged. Obviously it was, or I wouldn't be here today. The girl went silent after that, thinking hard. We continued walking through the maze of jail cells, not paying much attention to... well, to anything, really. I was too busy lost in thought, still trying to wrap my head around the whole law decree thing.

"Moondian! Look out!" The girl shouted suddenly. I had been watching my feet, so my head jerked up, just to find a palace guard running towards me, rapier aimed straight at my heart.

A/N Hehe ik it's been two weeks sorryyyyy I was busy. Anywho, I think imma go with steampunk XDD
