The moon shone brightly in the night sky as I breathed out a breath of air, recalling the events that happened earlier.
"Hey...I feel bad for taking your hospitality. Anything I can do for you?""Hmm..." He glanced towards his stack of books, weary from constant flipping, "Some books would be nice. You don't have to buy them, though. Library ones are just fine. There's one around here."
The memory wisped around my brain, stirring and forming questions. Even though there were obvious questions I should be looking into, they escaped my mind as if I were exhaling carbon dioxide.
Looking back, perhaps I was afraid of looking into it, for fear that Hope was all an illusion. The moonlight serenaded the leaves in a gentle sway as I made my way home, following its light. I stepped over the brambles once more. The once scraggly shrubs became familiar friends, the twigs now brushed aside instead of hitting my face. It seemed that this forest had opened up, and so had I.
The rocks on the trail became fewer, and the road became neater as I made my way back home. The clock read well over eight once I finally stepped through the threshold of my house. And there stood my mother.
The moon disappeared behind clouds.
My shoulders tensed, and my once-confident strides shortened by half.
"Do you know what time it is? Where were you?" My mother's stern voice ricocheted off the walls.
"Friend's house." I mumbled.
"Friend?! Who are they? Why were you out so late?!"
Anger bubbled from inside me as I spun around to face her, "And you care? If I recall: you said grades and studying are the most important thing for me. I'm not failing, so it shouldn't be a problem now, shouldn't it?"
Instead of answering, my mother dodged the question, "Who were you with?! You can't trust them!"
I thought back to the memories with Hope. Even though it's only been a few meetings and only a few weeks, I trusted him. His caramel eyes possessed nothing but warmth. Clenching my teeth, I retorted, "How do you know?!"
My mother was silent from the sudden outburst- I haven't reacted like that since middle school. However, my tongue-tied mother quickly regained her fury. "How do I know?! HOW DO I KNOW?! Your 'friend' will abandon you as soon as they see fit to do so! They don't care! Only your parents--your blood, your family will care about you!"
"He isn't like that! He..." I gulped down a tremor.
'Why am I doing this...?' the thought suddenly came to mind, and I was forced to ponder, 'why?'
Nothing would've happened if I hadn't defended him. In fact, by backing him up, I had made mother more irritated.
"IT'S A 'HE'?!"
