She struggled against the restraints as the creatures moved across the room menacingly toward her. Reality or not she was not going to be taken by them. One of the creatures suddenly appeared in front of her releasing the restraints but he held her back with his cold hands. Fear coursed through her veins as she twisted in his arms as another creature with the red robe that reached to the floor stood a few feet away. She kicked the one holding her taking him by surprise and she tried to move away but he recovered too fast. Before she could make it a few feet away, he pinned her to the wall behind them and wove a hand around her throat blocking her windpipe.
Evony kicked out, her heart raising as a grim realization set. No dream could be that real and be able to cause her so much pain. Her lungs were aching for breath but his hand only tightened as she struggled even more trying to push him off. Everything was futile, he was too strong and her mind was beginning to cloud because of the lack of air. Stop fighting mortal, you can’t possibly win against us. This is real. With her lungs aching for breath she clawed his bony arms where the sleeves had pulled back, leaving dark bloody traces and they loosened slightly from her throat. This creature was covered completely, his face was hidden by thick darkness that brought back memories of the tunnels she’d run through in her nightmare. Her heart raising, she took a gasping breath and tried to speak again but another creature came into view. This one looked almost human except for the black, glittering eyes in his pale face and he wasn’t wearing a robe. Instead he wore a gray shirt that looked oddly dark on his pale skin. He was broad-shouldered, tall, and had sharp features that were now pulled into a dark glare. When he spoke she realized the rest hadn’t said a word out loud and it had all taken place in her mind.
“The master said begin the extraction, not to kill her.” He had a deep voice that seemed to echo around the enormous room, the anger in it made fear uncoil in her belly and his next words made her freeze. “Well at least not yet.”
Evony pushed away from the creature’s grasp when it let her go and tried to put distance between them but she was already against the cold hard wall. Her necklace pulsed in her chest which strangely helped calm the erratic beat of her heart and clear her mind.
“Who are you? And what do you want from me?” Her voice was exalted as her breath came in heavy pants. The lighting was somewhat dim which made the creature’s eyes to gleam like diamonds when they caught the light. Those strange eyes pinned her own and he regarded her like an exotic animal.
“You are brave to demand answers so bluntly. What is that little saying you humans have? Curiosity killed the cat.” He gave cold grin before his eyes set on the emerald rock. Conscious about it Evony closed a hand over it blocking it from his sight to which he only grinned wider. “Dangerous curiosity, it runs in your family. And just like them you wear that dratted thing.”
Questions flew through her mind a mile per hour as she tried to grasp what he was saying. How did he know her parents? The necklace it was from her family? Swallowing the endless list of questions she set her shoulders and discreetly looked for an exit through the corner of her eye, not daring to lose him from her sight. As far as she could see there was no doors at all and to the other side stood the creatures. “What do you want from me?”
Her patience was wearing thin and fear lapped at her mind that tensed her muscles ready to run and never stop. A dangerous glint shone in his dark eyes but just as he was to respond, ‘The Master’ spoke again.
Stop wasting my time, just reach in her mind and take what is mine. The similarity to the voice that haunted her dreams caused her to shudder. You can talk all you please afterwards.
