As Shelly's eyes opened that morning, she nearly wanted to shut them again. This couldn't be real. This couldn't be her. Her stomach was massive, sticking out over a foot in front of her. To her estimation, she looked overdue with one baby. She could barely wrap her hands around it fully.
Shelly heaved herself up, getting a look at herself in the mirror. She was nude, so she could get a close look at the changes her body had gone through. Aside from her belly, her breasts were swollen and her hips were wider. As she turned to the side, she noticed that her butt had grown some as well.
She put her hands on her belly once more. Those gassy feelings returned, but this time they were much stronger. They felt almost like movement inside of her. Shelly shook her head defiantly and went to take a shower. Maybe that would help calm her down.
Shelly walked towards the shower, her belly grazing against the sink as she did so. She stepped inside of the glass shower and shut the door behind her. She turned on the shower and stood there as the cold water shot out.
She stood still as drops of water beat softly against her tight, massive stomach. The rhythmic water drops caused those movements to start up again. Shelly rubbed her belly slowly.
Finishing the shower, Shelly stepped out and got dried off. Thankfully, today was an off day, so she planned on staying in. She went to her closet and tried to find something that fit. She decided on a pair of yoga pants that hugged her protruding bottom and a purple tube top that didn't even begin to cover her belly.
Shelly entered the living room, and saw that Vicki was sitting on the couch. As soon as she saw her, she shot up.
"Shelly?!? Oh, my god!" she exclaimed, putting her hand over her mouth.
"I...I know. I'm huge..." Shelly stated.
"We need to get you to a doctor right now. Okay?" Vicki asked, trying to lead her on.
Shelly thought for a few moments, then nodded. "Okay."
Half an hour later, Shelly found herself sitting in a cold examination room on top of a table. Vicki sat beside her. After waiting a few moments, a doctor in her 40s entered the room.
"Hello, I'm Doctor Monroe. What seems to be the problem?" she asked.
Shelly and Vicki looked at each other before Vicki spoke up. "Shelly here has been experiencing some...alarming stomach growth. She was as thin as a rail a few days ago."
"Okay. Well, don't you worry, Shelly. We'll find out what's going on in there," she assured her, lightly patting her belly.
Doctor Monroe approached Shelly and helped her off of the table. "First we'll need to take your weight."
Shelly waddled over to the scale. It creaked as she put both feet on it. Doctor Monroe looked over some of her files.
"This file says that you were 110 at your last visit. Is that so?" the doctor asked.
"That's right," Shelly said.
The doctor walked over to the scale and began to adjust it. Shelly looked down at her feet, trying not to look at how much she'd gained. The only problem was that she couldn't see her feet. Her belly was in the way. Finally, the doctor stepped back.
"Alright. Ooh boy. 174..." the doctor said.
Vicki looked on in silence. She expected Shelly to explode in anger and frustration, but instead she only buried her face in her hands.~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Okay, let's go back to the table, shall we?" the doctor instructed.
She led Shelly back to the examination table, and with Vicki's assistance they helped her up. Doctor Monroe instructed her to lie down, and she did.
Doctor Monroe placed her hands on Shelly's stomach, feeling around. She glanced at Shelly, but remained silent. The doctor grabbed her stethoscope and rested it on the surface of her huge belly. After a few seconds, she'd move it, settle and listen for a few moments, then move it again.
"Hmm...I think we'll need an ultrasound," she stated.~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The doctor rolled in a sonogram machine and set it up next to Shelly. Vicki stood by her side, resting a supportive hand on her roommate's shoulder. Doctor Monroe squirted gel onto Shelly's stomach and pressed a probe into it. She moved it around, and a whirring noise emitted from the machine.
"Oh my..." the doctor said as she looked at the monitor.
"What?" Shelly and Vicki asked in unison.
"Well, Shelly, you're pregnant."
Vicki looked at Shelly, trying to meet her eyes, but Shelly just stared forward. She seemed almost shellshocked.
"How far along is she, doctor?" Vicki asked.
"By my best guess, I'd say they're around five months," she replied.
Shelly looked up, her eyes wide. That seemed to get her to snap out of it.
"I'm sorry, did you say 'they'?" Vicki questioned.
"I did. I count eight. Shelly, you're carrying octuplets."
"I...what?!? How?" was all that Shelly could muster.
"I would think you'd know. When was the last time you had sex?" the doctor asked.
"I...I don't know. I guess it might have been five months ago.," she replied.
"Doctor, how is she having octuplets? Isn't that amount nearly impossible without IVF? And Shelly hasn't done any fertility treatments," Vicki said.
"Again, I'm unsure. Shelly, let's get you scheduled for another appointment in two days. Then we can see how things are progressing. If it's any consolation. The babies are all looking healthy. For a multiple pregnancy of this magnitude, that's almost unheard of," the doctor said.
Shelly rubbed her belly. "Oh. Great."Shelly and Vicki sat at the kitchen table, waiting for pizza to arrive.
"I still have no idea how this happen to you. I mean, five days ago, you were fine!" Vicki exclaimed.
"Trust me, I know," Shelly said, taking a bite.
"Wait, five days ago. That's when I got sick, right?" Shelly asked.
"Yeah. Why?" her roommate asked.
"And the doctor said I was five months pregnant?" she continued.
Vicki raised an eyebrow.
"And five days ago, I bought this necklace," Shelly added.
"Wait. Are you implying that the necklace got you pregnant? And each day you're going through a month of pregnancy?" she asked.
"Exactly!"
"That sounds insane!" Vicki said.
"What other explanation is there?" Shelly asked.
Vicki shook her head. "I don't know. But if that's true, then that means that you're giving birth in..."
"Four days. If I don't explode before then." Shelly rubbed her belly, feeling her babies kick.
