Your POV

I was talking to John and Alex about less messed-up things I'd missed since over a month before. Although it was most Alex ranting about how John Adams wouldn't listen to a plan he had for their office.

"I'm telling you, even Jefferson and Madison are pretty much on the same page with me, which is helpful even if I'm not a fan of them. And yet Adams is just-"

Knock, knock, knock.

Alex stopped talking, looking to the door. "Why is someone-"

"Come in!" I replied. Usually, a nurse or a doctor would just come in, so I was curious as to who could've been out there. (B/F/N) or Amara? Even Noah or Owen?

The door opened after a moment, none other than Laf poking his head through the door. "Umm.. Bonjour, mes amours.."

"Laf?" I started slowly after a moment. "What're you doing here..?"

"I, uh.." Laf cleared his throat awkwardly, looking towards the ground. "I needed to walk away from 'erc.."

"You.. needed to walk away from Herc," John repeated skeptically, raising an eyebrow. "Am I hearin' that correctly?"

"Err, oui," Laf answered after a moment.

"So, you mean to tell us that you needed to walk away from the one you've sided with this whole time, even when he straight up lied--"

"John," I cut him off, glancing over to him. He sighed, leaning back in his chair and folding his arms. "Sorry.."

I looked back to Laf, Alex speaking up. "So, why now of all times are you deciding to not be with Herc?"

"We got into a bit of a... disagreement," Laf responded.

"Oh?" Alex said curiously.

Laf sighed. "'ow do I explain... Well, we just.. 'e said..."

He groaned after a moment, shaking his head and muttering something to himself. "J'ai réalisé que j'avais tort, mais 'erc ne comprend toujours pas. Il pense toujours qu'il a raison et pas le méchant." (I realized I was wrong, but Herc still doesn't understand. He still thinks he's right and not the bad guy.)

"J'avais le sentiment dès le départ que l'accompagner n'était pas le bon choix, mais je l'ai fait quand même, et j'étais trop nerveux pour changer de camp par la suite. Mais, il m'a convaincu pendant un moment qu'il avait raison. Jusqu'à ce que John nous rende enfin visite, et j'ai commencé à réaliser la vérité." (I had the feeling from the start that going with him was not the right choice, but I did it anyway, and I was too nervous to switch sides afterward. But, he convinced me for a while that he was right. Until John finally visited us, and I started to realize the truth.)

"Longue histoire courte, je suis très désolé. Je veux arranger les choses, et j'espère pouvoir encore aider." (Long story short, I'm very sorry. I want to make things right, and I hope I can still help.)

The room was silent a short time, Alex and I both processing what he said (John probably silent because he had no idea what Laf just said, save for very few bits and pieces).

"So, you're saying Herc essentially manipulated you?" Alex finally spoke up.

Laf nodded. "Oui.. je suis désolé."

"If I understood enough of that correctly," John added, expression finally becoming less tense, "Herc manipulated you, like Alex said, into going with him, but you wanna help us now?"

He nodded again. "Oui! I want to 'elp. I don't know 'ow yet, but I'm 'ere to try."

John chuckled a bit to himself. "Guess you still got some sense in you after all."

I sent him another look, and both Laf and him only laughed, myself shaking my head amusedly and looking at Alex, who was equally amused. It felt oddly normal for what had been happening.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say things were relatively normal, even given my own current condition (was still waiting for the doctor to tell me when I'd be going home though). John was loosening up, Alex was expressing his disdain for Adams, and Laf was getting back into his charming self.

Of course, there was still a piece of the puzzle missing, and we all knew it. We weren't exactly sure what good options we had though.

"ow are we supposed to bring 'erc 'ere? I believe 'e is not going to want to be 'ere." It was Laf who finally asked the question.

"Someone's gonna have to talk him into coming here, I think," I answered. "He'll prob'ly only try to come visit when he knows it would only be him here."

"Well, he obviously ain't gonna wanna see Laf at the moment, and I doubt he's gonna wanna see me or Lex either," John replied.

"Is my phone still working?" I asked. "I think it had been in my back pocket but you never know. I could always text Herc on it though."

"I think it still works?" Alex responded. "I don't see why it wouldn't unless it managed to break by some odds. John had taken it out of your pocket though; he knows where it is."

John nodded. "I can go grab it. Hang tight."

"I guess now we wait and see."

So we did. Until finally...

The text bubble didn't appear though. And it didn't for a few minutes. I turned my phone off, simply deciding to check it when it chimed.

Either Herc knew something was up, or he was genuinely busy at the shop. Still, a reply would've been nice. The four of us just continued to talk like before.

Ding!

Herc: Sure sweetheart. I'll try and be there for 5:30

yknow one day i'll finish this book skhdfgs. i've literally been updating this since the summer of 2018 bc my ability to update is terrible but i don't wanna go on an actual hiatus bc i'll feel bad-

the day i actually finish this and Don't Need Them is gonna be bizzare i swear-

speaking of endings, i do actually have an ending in mind for this book. idk when i'll get there, but i will eventually. i think y'all will like it tho-
