Summer. Summer is my favorite time of the year. In summer, there is no school and extra daylight, which means more time in the sun and into the night with friends and family. My summer always consist of a little part time work, hanging out with my friends almost everyday, going to the lake, and hanging out with my grandparents.
Grandparents you might say. Well, my grandparents raise me and have raised me since I was 15. It's been 2 years with them and my life is 10x better. My parents chose drugs over me for years. They were both 15 when I was born and they never got to be teenagers because of that. At some point, they gave up being parents and went off and made some bad choices. Finally, after many years and court battles, my grandparents gained custody of me.
My grandparents are the best. They do struggle sometimes between finding the middle ground between having to be "parents"and being the "grandparent". I try not to do anything that would cause them to have to go into parent mode. I do help them whenever I can.
My grandpa and I are extremely close and also have been. He is my best friend. But both he and my grandma are doing their best to make sure I have a normal teenage life.
Their house is the hangout spot. No matter what, my friends and I always end up at my house. The got a ton of snacks and a pool, and the entire basement is my space. My grandparents turned the entire space into my room. We even got a bathroom put in down there.
In the 2 years I have been with my grandparents, I had to move states which meant making new friends and a new school. When I started at my high school 2 years ago, I met a girl who was in all my classes. Her name is Madison and we are still best friends to this day. She then introduced me to her friend group, which was a group of 4 boys. Luke, Michael and Calum are the same age as Madison and I. Then there's Ashton. Ashton is a year older but he grew up with the other boys.
Ashton and I hit it off immediately. He was cute, funny, nice, and hardworking. We were attracted to each other. We denied that for a while but just over a year ago now, he asked me to be his girlfriend after we had went on a few dates. Ashton graduated this past school year and now works for a construction company building houses. It'll be weird at school without Ashton there but we will still see him all the time. My grandparents love my friends, and they especially love Ashton. My grandpa and him get along freakishly well.
As good as my life is right now, I still have a lot emotionally that I have to deal with surrounding my parents and my life. I'm still healing- and I have a lot of it to do- but with my grandparents, friends, and boyfriend, dealing with it is a little easier.
