I stared at the short message for a few seconds, not knowing how to respond. I didn’t think that they would ask for my name right away! I didn’t have one planned, I hadn’t really thought about it. Maybe I could avoid it. Yeah, I didn't have to choose a name right at that moment. I typed a quick text back and immediately pressed send, no hesitation this time.

Lizzie:

Sorry to bother you. Found this number on a piece of paper at school today, it was just on the floor.

Now I had to wait. As I did that, freaking out a bit that whoever this was finally answered, I started to write a group message to Cass, Zana, Adelaide and Vicky. I was halfway through typing when I got a message from Cass.

Cass:

It’s been hours. Might not answer. Just leave it Liz. Sorry it didn’t happen.

They were giving up on it? A thought came to my mind. These girls were like my sisters, we were always in each other’s business. Maybe I didn’t have to tell them. It’s not like they would look through my phone, I could let them believe it was just a joke that Tanner and his goonies tried to pull. They would easily believe that.

I erased my half-written message and wrote a new one.

Lizzie:

Hasn’t answered. Probably just a random number that the idiots found. Deleting it.

Surprisingly, I didn’t feel bad about lying to my friends. It’s not like we hadn’t kept secret before, and this isn’t even a harmful one. If I did even feel a twinge of guilt over what I had just done, it didn’t last long. My attention was pulled back to my phone screen when it lit up again.

(Unknown):

Oh okay, no prob.

That was it? Nothing else? I was bothered by the short reply, it seemed kind of anticlimactic. I had been waiting all day, for hours and hours, for two short answers.

(Unknown):

So you go to Richmond Hill High then?

My heart skipped a beat and I was no longer bothered. Whoever this person was, they were trying to start a conversation. I wrote back my answer hurriedly, not wanting them to get bored and leave.

Lizzie:

Yea, you?

This time, I got a fast reply.

(Unknown):

Yea. What classes are you in?

They were trying to narrow-down possibilities until they found out who I was without actually asking me. Clever.
