I sighed quietly, neatly stacking up the last documents from Ground Zero's latest missions. Drowned in the music coming from my earbuds, I barely noticed Candice trying to get my attention. She was older, wrinkles already obvious on her heavily makeup caked face. Dark brown hair with grey roots framed her face as she looked over me with a scornful glare.
"You about done with those, boy?" She snapped impatiently as soon as I pulled my earbuds out.
"I am done." I said, biting back an impatient tone and an eye roll. She rolled her eyes.
"Good. Now get the hell out of my sight." I rolled my eyes as the snappy woman walked out of sight. She pissed me off to no end, but the job was worth it. I stalked down the quiet hallways, pausing and knocking on the fancy mahogany door with gold trim, and a matching doorknob.
"Yes?" A deep, rumbling voice called. I pulled the door open and peaked my head in. A tall man that looked strikingly similar to me glanced up, smiling slightly. Black hair was cropped in a military buzz cut, grey eyes hardened with years of knowledge and pain were stony behind his square glasses, his gaze meeting mine. "You all done?" He asked, taking a step towards me. The ground shook slightly as his foot made contact with the ground.
"Yeah. I'm going to head out."
He nodded, frowning. "Goodnight then, Ray. I'll see you tomorrow night." He grumbled.
"Are you working late again?" I asked, pushing the door open more. He sighed, nodding. "Anything I can help with?" I pressed.
"Ray, you have school tomorrow. Head home." He replied sternly, peering at me through his glasses. I sighed in defeat.
Alright. Goodnight uncle." I responded. Plugging my earbuds back in I made my way to the elevator, hopping in with a couple other of the night owls. With my thoughts distracted, I waited patiently as we descended several floors, before I waved to the receptionist. I pulled out my keys and made my way to my motorcycle, swinging my leg over, grabbing my helmet and putting it on before bringing the machine roaring to life. The metal hummed underneath me as I peeled out of the parking garage and into the night, the large Ground Zero Agency building fading into the distance behind me.
Wind pulled slightly at my flannel, dull streetlamps and stars lighting my path. I stopped at a small, local restaurant. I walked out with two bags of takeout, strapping them to the back before driving home. I pulled into the empty garage, turning off the bike.
My keys jingled on my hero Shadow themed lanyard, swinging slowly as I made my way up the steps and to the front door of the mansion. I unlocked the door, shutting it behind me. Hardwood floors and beige walls made up a small hallway, leading farther into the house. I slipped my shoes off, a black cat taking advantage of my hunched position to leap onto my shoulders and curl up around my neck. Her soft green eyes watched my tired face with content as I continued placing my shoes in their spot on the floor.
"Hi, Demon Queen." I murmured, scratching her behind the ears absentmindedly. I stood, making my way into the living room. The house was silent. I dumped my backpack in the entryway before I turned and went into the large kitchen, flicking on the lights and setting my takeout bags on the counter, opening one of the cabinets. Demon Queen kept nimbly from my shoulders to the counter, her tail twitching as she waited. I set out two small plates and divided a can of cat food between them before setting them on the floor. Demon Queen jumped down to her food, meowing softly. I moved over to a tablet and pressed play, letting music fill the room as I pulled out my sketchbook, turning on the coffee machine. The door opened, and I turned down the music slightly.
"Hey bitch." I called.
"Hey shithead! How was work?" He yelled back, I could hear him moving around in the living room.
"Same as usual. How's Jacob doing?" I asked as he walked into the kitchen. I threw a balled up napkin at his head, sticking my tongue out at him. He just rolled his eyes, dumping his bag on a chair.
"He's doing better. Parents are still being pieces of shit. He'll probably be stopping by tonight." He peered into the takeout bags. I got up, grabbing two plates and two mugs, dividing the food for the both of us and pouring each of us a cup of coffee.
"He's always welcome here." I reminded him, passing him a cup.
"Yeah I know." He sighed, taking a sip. Jayden was my best friend, and my adopted brother. He had long black hair that he always put up in a weird half up, half down style, showing off his piercing green, tired eyes, a slightly crooked nose from a few too many playground brawls, and the dark bags under his eyes. He always looked like he was about to topple over, but that was something we shared in common. That, and a shared history. His arms were covered in sleeves of tattoos. Black, swirling ink disappearing under his shirt, wrapping around his biceps and peeking out from under the collar of his black shirt. He was two years older than me, and not only held a Hero's provisional license, but was also in his last year of high school at Ravenwood Academy. Our dream high school.
He stood up, taking his plate to the sink. I hummed along with the music as he helped me with dishes.
"Lady Murder..." He suddenly said from behind me in a warning tone. I turned to see our orange tabby cat poised to knock the nearly empty jug of milk I had left open on the edge of the counter. I gave her a warning glare, which she took as a challenge, swatting it off the counter and scampering away.
"Mother fucker!" I yelped, jumping back to escape the milk that was sprayed across the floor from impact.
"That little shit!" Jayden cursed, giving a chase after the fleeing feline. I grabbed a couple of paper towels and began mopping up the mess with a long sigh.
