“We walk in plain daylight just as you do. We eat, sleep, work. Just as anyone does. But deep down we are different. We are special. We have abilities no one else can have. We have abilities only dreamed of. We have those powers that you read about in your little comics and fantasy novels. We are a secret that not even the government knows about. We are the chapter that protects Archview, our home, in which we serve and live. Our duty is to keep it safe from harm.

“No one knows what we do. They all think the disasters going away are from the blessed miracles of life. But that's just their minds trying to find a way to make sense of it.”

“I became apart of this guild when I was your age. I started when I was young, worked my way up and now I'm the last of the original guild. My name is Gavin, Gavin Mercer. These are the first words I'll say to you. The first words I'll burn into your mind. Welcome to the guild of the Guardians. Plain and simple. Now you're one of us, kid. The guild is glad to have you with us.”

“That was my first day in the Guardians” Dax thought to himself. “My first day in the only place that would accept me.” Dax wandered through town on his way to his house. As he passed the home of his best friend, Jessica Conners. He climbed up the tree and knocked at her window. “You could have called first.” said Jess as she got up to open the window. “Ya, I know, but the signal out here sucks and you know it.” Dax responded as he leaped in through the window. 'What are you doing here anyway?” Jess asked Dax. “ I just thought I'd see my beautiful friend before I head home. If you want me to leave then I can do just that.” Dax said sarcastically. “No! No! I don't... it's just that it's late Dax and you need to get home. We start school tomorrow.” Jess said in a worried manner. She worried for Dax and cared for him deeply.

They've been through a lot together. She always knew he was special. They looked into each others eyes and just gazed. Dax finally broke the silence, “What happened to you and me?” “Oh Dax, just stop! That's in the past now and I'd rather not talk about it.” Jess said rapidly. “ I understand, Jess.” Dax said as he looked at her, heading towards the window, making it open. “Hey, I'll see you tomorrow. Okay, beautiful.” He said as he leaped out the window and vanished. Jess looked out the window and closed it. She then went to sleep. To drift away in her dreams.
