One step. Two steps. Three steps. Shuffle. One step. Two Steps. Shuffle. The pattern of my foot falls are the only thing sure and safe within my life. The constant downbeat never falters nor wavers. Yet, they leap forward, bounding in great strides towards an uncertain destination. I can only hope they lead me to some reprieve, to a heaven of any sort. No matter how weary or tired and hopeless, I shall believe. Believe in the possibility of anything. Because if I don't, then I have nothing to live for. One step. Two steps. Three Steps. Shuffle. One step. Two steps. Shuffle. The constant buzzing and bustling of the city surrounds me. But I pay it no mind as I skimper and drag along to the pulsating beat of the music through my headphones. My suitcase scrapes across the concrete behind me. It's vibrations shoot up my arms and calm my heart full of intrepidness. One step. Two steps. Three steps. Shuffle. One step. Two steps. Pause. My monotonous stare flutters up to the glittering, shining building. Rooms lit up despite the late hour and bodies frantically moving inside them in sequences of purpose. Perspiration drench their limbs, and ligaments ache with every fiber of their being . Yet as they stop, they smile brightly at each other as if they've achieved the greatest thing in the world. My eyes drop back down to the dark street and I continue on the pathway. Away from the life I once knew and thought I loved. Away from the memories that hold me captive and drown me.
